My clone of git://xenbits.xen.org/qemu-upstream-unstable.git doesn't
have any tags at all in it. Are you sure you haven't fetched some other
remotes into your tree and therefore picked up their tags?

Not here it doesn't:
$ git fetch -v origin
From git://xenbits.xen.org/qemu-upstream-unstable
= [up to date] master -> origin/master
$ git fetch --tags origin
$ git fetch -v staging
From git://xenbits.xen.org/staging/qemu-upstream-unstable
= [up to date] master -> staging/master
$ git fetch --tags staging
$ git tag -l
http://xenbits.xen.org/gitweb/?p=qemu-upstream-unstable.git;a=tags doesn't show any tags either.
