xcp-xapi toolstack on ubuntu 14.04
Hi all,
already since some time I am trying to install a xcp-xapi tool-stack on
an ubuntu 14.04 system.

I have posted in various xen related forums for help but last but not
least was directed to this list.

Target is to have a xen-server running on a ubuntu host able to manage
the xen-server with xen-center on windows.

To be honest. The various systems on xen (xen hypervisor, citrix xen
server, .....) do confuse me a little bit. My understanding is the
xcp-xapi tool-stack is what I need if I want ubuntu to be the host -
probably wrong!?

Is there anywhere a how-to on that!?
Hall how-to's I found are on 12.04 and the packages named there do not
exist and do not work on 14.04.

Hi,

For Ubuntu 14.04 please check out buildroot (https://github.com/xenserver/buildroot). This repository can be used for building packages on many different distributions although it does not include pre-built packages.

Thanks,

Bob

It can only build 64-bit XAPI, can I use it to build 32-bit XAPI by
modifying some configuration files?

Hi Firma,

The route we're recommending right now is to use
http://github.com/xenserver/buildroot which will create .debs for use in
ubuntu. If you come across any problems, please create issues on the
github page, or post here. You can also pop into #xen-api on freenode
for help.

Hi Karl,

What sort of loop? It does have to make an awful lot of packages - it
takes a bit over an hour for me right now.

Hi Jon,

Ok, I did not give it an hour since it looked like it tries to install
always the same packages.

I'll let it run.
Thanks
Will come back with info.

Hi,

It builds packages using chroots, so each package build has to reinstall libraries — that’s probably what you’re seeing. It’s perfectly normal :-)

Hi all,
ok, partial success.

make did it - after a long time

make install and the wizard and reboot did it as well.

But what now?
To connect via XenCenter I need a user and a password. Where to set this
in the config.

Is there a how-to?

Hi all,
I had to change grub sequence:

cd /etc/grub.d
mv 10_linux 25_linux
update-grub2

Now its booting into xen - as I understand the world.

But I still do not have an idea how to connect with XenCenter.

Processes running:

root 51 2 0 19:22 ? 00:00:00 [xenwatch]
root 52 2 0 19:22 ? 00:00:00 [xenbus]
root 58 2 0 19:22 ? 00:00:00 [xenbus_frontend]
root 1497 1 0 19:22 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/xen-4.4/bin/xenstored --pid-file=/var/run/xenstore.pid
root 1503 1 0 19:22 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/xen-4.4/bin/xenconsoled --pid-file=/var/run/xenconsoled.pid

What to do next to get XenCenter connection running?

Karl-Heinz

xapi uses PAM for authentication. Try logging in with your root password.

That’s a good idea — someone should write one! :)

Hi all,
O.K.

since ubunut normally does not have a root password I have tried with a
different user I normally work with.
No success.
Nothing in the normal logs.

It's a way with small steps to heaven.

Help appreciated.

Could someone comment, what is the future of xcp-xapi on ubuntu? I've
just found this https://bugs.debian.org/740517 for Debian.

Best regards!

From the point of view of xapi upstream, our new focus is to be a better upstream. When the last version of xcp-xapi was packaged it needed a lot of patching to work in a debian dom0. This made it sufficiently different from the released branches on github that fixes wouldn’t apply cleanly and it was too hard for anyone to maintain. Since then, we’ve been working hard making the code portable so that it “just works” if you “tar -xvf; ./configure; make” and we’re almost finished. The next release of xapi (2.0) should be much easier to package for any Linux distro without excessive patching. Then, when we make bugfixes to release branches, they’ll apply cleanly to the packaged source.

I hope that someone will try again to package xcp-xapi, after we hit 2.0.

HTH,
Dave

Re: xcp-xapi toolstack on ubuntu 14.04 [ In reply to ]
I'd set a root password and try to get it working that way. We always
run as root here, so it's likely that running as a normal user will
require code changes.

Re: xcp-xapi toolstack on ubuntu 14.04 [ In reply to ]
Hi Jon,
sorry, no success.

I guess something else must be wrong since the xe-command (should be
working with xcp-xapi I guess) says it has an connection error.

Re: xcp-xapi toolstack on ubuntu 14.04 [ In reply to ]
Sounds like xapi hasn't started correctly. Check in the logs for
'thread_zero' and see where it's got to. Additionally, try 'message-cli
diag'.

Hi,
what do you mean with "message-cli". When typing this as command on the
shell it does return nothing.

After starting xapi manually:

Re: xcp-xapi toolstack on ubuntu 14.04 [ In reply to ]
Hi all,

in /etc/init.d/xapi there are lines:

# Source config
if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/$prog ] ; then
. /etc/sysconfig/$prog
fi

This is, as far as I know, debian style.
Ubunut normaly has params in /etc/default/xapi - but this does not exist.

I guess, therefore
start_daemon -p "$PIDFILE" $exec -pidfile "$PIDFILE" -daemon true
$XAPI_OPTIONS

does not have any options. probably correct, probably the root cause why
xapi is not running.

Can't say.

Did you run the 'xenserver-install-wizard' script? It's not just xapi
that needs to be started but many other services (fe, rrdd,
message-switch, xenopsd, etc)?

Hi Firma,

Take a look at https://github.com/xenserver/buildroot

Here you can build xapi for Ubuntu 14.04. Just follow the readme :)

Hi all,
this is already done.

But it looks like xapi does not start.

xe-command is not available.
I had provided some logfile elements but did not get any response where
to look at.

Help appreciated.

A quick aside: some of the scripts have not been packaged into the RPM. So `xe <subcommand>` should work but there are some commands like `xe-<command>` (e.g. xe-toolstack-restart) will not.

There is an open issue for that:

https://github.com/xenserver/buildroot/issues/495
