At http://download.wikipedia.org/ I noticed that:

Last dump made: 2003-07-13 (15 days ago)

If this had been a hard drive crash....

good point. How do backups work? is the server ever backed up, or just
the datadumps and then kinda like "lets hope someone downloaded the db
sup today"?

normally Brion is doing the backup. He dumps the database during a downtime
and burns the dump onto some CDs.
