What performance wil you measure? There are a lot of possible bottlenecks:
- If it is a virtual display as default on unix, then there is the
performance of Xvnc, the X11 server.
- If it is a copy of a physical display, then how is the information
grabbed? With unix/linux, it can be hooked into the X11 server on the
physical display, or it can be hooked into the display manager process.
For all msWindows (and sometimes for unix too) it is a polling meganism
that scans for changes.
Then there is the network usage. The bandwith of the network can be an
issue, however, for the responsiveness, the network delay (the
ping-time) can be a source of slow response too.
Finally what is the local display: the process of the local viewer
(binary or java) and the used local hardware/os/software.

at the desktop that counts.

Less features indicates less code to share the resources.
In the end, I'd say the features of vnc let me guide which variant to
use, not the performance. If performance is an issue, I donnot think vnc
is the first one to blame, most times it is due to lack of resources on
or between the local and remote systems: busy remote system, low network
troughput or even busy local system.
