It would be nice to have access to something like beresp.backend.name from
vcl_error -- so that incase a backend fails; I can return more detail in
the error, such as the host that failed.

Also req.backend (available during vcl_recv) is not enough since I have a
very large number of backends under a director ~ 120 hosts

This works in recent versions of 4.0, 4.1 and master.

If you're still in 3.0 please upgrade to a more recent version.
