Better Error Messages...
Currently on the spf-test mail verifier, if one has 'mx:ip4:192.168.0.4' in
their SPF record, the error message is:

SPF Permanent Error: Invalid domain found (use FQDN): ip4:192.168.0.4

I think this could be better/clearer. I'm open to suggestions about what the
error message in this case should be. More commonly I see errors like:

a:mail

Which would yield:

SPF Permanent Error: Invalid domain found (use FQDN): mail

This seems reasonable. So, I'd like to not mess that up.

I'm looking for suggestions....

It is always good to put the problematic string in double quotes. Then, do
mention the context of the invalid part:

Invalid domain found in "mx" mechanism: "ip4:192.168.0.4". Use a fully
qualified domain name (FQDN).

In addition to Julian's comment, you could state "'4' is no known TLD
(like 'com')". That would also work for the a:mail case. With that
you'd get different error messages if something else is wrong in the
FQDN, like say mx:ip4:192.168.0.com
