Backhair Etc RDJ Notice
Hi all,

If you are using the daily update for my rules at emtinc.net, you should
disable it. Firstly, the site is now (finally) changing hosts, and I
will not be updating the rules any more, so there will be no need to do
a daily check. I believe the rules are good stable as they are, and
will remain available to download for anyone who wants them from chris'
site, and the page they are on (when they get to their new home).

I just contacted a friend who will be doing the move, so it's out of my
hands. I'll give more details when I get them. Like I said though, I
don’t really see a need to keep these sets in rules du jour as I will
not be doing any more tweaking on them.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

Will there be an update to rules_du_jour that disables the emtinc entries?
I'm trying to incorporate rules_du_jour into a whole bunch of servers and am
hoping that it will more or less take care of itself, rather than me having
to make a large number of manual changes....

I'm well aware of that, as I use my_rules_du_jour to call rules_du_jour.
However, I have many dozens of machines in different locations and now one
or more of the selected rulesets is completely invalid. There should be a
centralized change to rules_du_jour (which already replaces itself with
newer versions as part of the update process) reflecting the changes to
Jennifer's domain rather than having to manually change 24 or more
"my_rules_du_jour" scripts.

That's what "my_rules_du_jour" is all about, disabling those rule
sets you don't want to use, or enabling those rule sets you do want
to use.

Hi Richard,

I'm not really sure how RDJ works, I don’t use it, I am more into manual
updates. I just knew a lot of people had those sets on the updates. I
think you can just disable the lookups for the sets I was working on. I
don’t really think they need too much tweaking from here, and if they
do, there are plenty of great writers on the list that could make the
tweaks. I had to leave an unfortunate situation (aka my job) so I wont
be working with SA any more. This has been a difficult drawn out
situation that I've been struggling with, which is what has caused some
problems with people using the sets. Best to just go back to my
spiderhole. ;)

I hate to go public with all this. I'm a major hermit, but I know a lot
of people are using those rules. I would just say, disable them in your
RDJ and use what you have. Maybe someone else will improve on them.

Take care,
jennifer

Indeed, I have just updated RDJ.

However, please note: rules_du_jour does *NOT* replace itself. It
*ONLY* checks for an update, retrieves that update, and informs you via
email where it put it. It does *NOT* replace the old version of itself
with the freshly downloaded version.

OK, back on topic: If you are using the stock configuration, the
emtinc.net rulesets will no longer update automatically. If you use
my_rules_du_jour and haven't redefined the emtinc.net array variables,
the rulesets will no longer update automatically.

At some time, depending on circumstances, I may re-add Jennifer's
rulesets to the stock RDJ config (obviously not pointing to emtinc.net).

Finally, I just wanted to publicly thank Jennifer for the work she has
done and the enormous contribution she has made to SA and spamfighting
in general.

Actually, I got it to replace itself by placing it and running it from the
/etc/spamassassin/RulesDuJour directory. That way I don't have to
intervene.

Thanks for all your hard work as well. Without these additional rulesets,
the program would not be anywhere near as effective.

Just one more little note. Emtinc.net is not the company I left. (I
would hate to give those good people a bad name) I left the company
that hosted them, so the rules will remain on emtinc.net as I will still
be working withthem. (at a new host, the company I worked for hosted
them). The problem is, the server that ran spamassassin was with the
hosting company I helped build, so in leaving them, I no longer have
access to SA, mass amounts of spam, blahbitty blah blah blah.... so I
just anticipate I'll be ineffective for a period. I shall let you know
if I rejoin the fight. I certainly will lurk (out of my love for SA and
spamfighting, unless my heart breaks into a zillion pieces) and if I
hook up with another techy company rather than a medical company, I will
get back into the mix.

Thanks to everyone writing to me. This was a horrible choice I had to
make and I appreciate the support. Kick the spammers in the bum!

Thanks for your contributions to SA and fighting spam Jennifer!

I'm sure many of the people here would be glad to provide access to SA
servers and/or perhaps hire your skills.

Good luck with your job change!

I am mirroring all the files on my site. A Major SARE update is around the
corner. Hopefully released next week. Just trying to clean up and add, and
categorize everything that is out now.

I will be keeping in touch with Jen thru my Jedi mind connection. Its the
only thing that penetrates the walls of the spiderhole.
