Is there a module that will let me read .zip files and extract
selected files from the archive.

Don´t know wether this exists allready, but maybe you can adjust the
stuff Konrad Hinsen has programmed for gz-compressed-files. He wrote a
class which can transparently handle gz-compression via gnuzip (afaik).
