This email did not have the list address in the Cc: or To: fields.

Perhaps the list maintainer would consider putting filter that would
just bounce such messages to sender?

If all on the list agrees, of course.

I have found that a good 80% of spam is eliminated this way---the rest
can be taken care of using the rbl lists. This time, the originating
address does not seem to be in any of the rbl lists yet.

I want to keep the list as open as possible, but will close it if
it gets spammed repeatedly. My definition of "repeatedly" at the
moment is two times within a calendar month.

Do you have a handy recipe that I can do this filtering with?

My suggestion has nothing to do with openness of the list. The
majority of spam does not put the recipient(s) address in the To or Cc
fields, but people who post to this list does.

Unfortunately, I use qmail, but postfix should have a similar way to
bounce messages. The point is to use the filter called iftocc. It is
in the package mess822 at

The line I am using is

|bouncesaying 'The list address must be in To: or Cc: .' except iftocc
lyx-users@lists.lyx.org lyx-users@lyx.org

where lyx-users@lists.lyx.org and lyx-users@lyx.org are the addresses
that have to appear in the To: or Cc:; otherwise the mail is bounced.

Here is the man page for iftocc

NAME
iftocc - check for blind carbon copies

SYNOPSIS
iftocc [ okaddr ... ]

DESCRIPTION
iftocc reads a mail message from its standard input. It
exits 0 if $RECIPIENT is listed in a To or Cc field, 100
if not. Addresses are compared without regard to case.

If you list some okaddrs, iftocc will use them in place of
$RECIPIENT. It exits 100 if none of them are listed in To
or Cc.

If you tell me how postfix/majordomo bounces messages, I'll make up
the receipe.
