One thing I have noticed: At least in some affected areas, it doesn't appear to be all customers affected. For example, my phone and tablet have no service, but my watch will connect to LTE just fine and place and receive calls.

Likewise, a buddy of mine came by here, and his phones have full 5G service on AT&T. I've also seen other reports of multiple AT&T phones sitting next to each other, some of them working perfectly fine, and others having no service at all.

I'd love to see the postmortem on this.

Jeremy

I encourage my customers to always assume carriers, hardware, and software
are going to fail and have backup plans/methods. Either the business pays
for it before it's needed or they lose money or productivity that affects
the bottom line. It's a pretty simple equation: Hey Boss, if the business
is OK with outages we do not need backup/redundancy. But if we are out for
x hours it will cost y dollars. What's your business decision: pay for
redundancy/backup or be ok with outages? Redundancy is not necessarily a
technical issue; it is a business issue.

One thing I have noticed: At least in some affected areas, it doesn’t appear to be all customers affected. For example, my phone and tablet have no service, but my watch will connect to LTE just fine and place and receive calls.

Likewise, a buddy of mine came by here, and his phones have full 5G service on AT&T. I’ve also seen other reports of multiple AT&T phones sitting next to each other, some of them working perfectly fine, and others having no service at all.

I’d love to see the postmortem on this.

I encourage my customers to always assume carriers, hardware, and software are going to fail and have backup plans/methods. Either the business pays for it before it's needed or they lose money or productivity that affects the bottom line. It's a pretty simple equation: Hey Boss, if the business is OK with outages we do not need backup/redundancy. But if we are out for x hours it will cost y dollars. Agreed!

After reading through more lines of someone’s extremely obnoxious email signature than actual discussion in this thread, it seems like there is a huge amount of panic associated with this. Yes, it sucks that outages happen, and they shouldn’t happen… but cell service is a best effort offering and we cannot control the telcos and their DR plans (or lack thereof).

Modern cell phones all have dual SIM capabilities, afaik. If your cell phone is as critical as its played out to be, get a second SIM on another carrier. Even if it’s just a cheap prepaid SIM on an MVNO that doesn’t use the same underlying carrier… It’s cheap insurance to keep you connected.

Modern phones don’t use hardware sims to the best of my knowledge, using e-sims instead.
(Though I think there is still a slot for a hardware sim in case you need to work with a backwards carrier).
I’ll note that this outage apparently affected ATT, Verizon, and T-Mo which account for the vast majority of licensed spectrum in the US. (Basically all three primary carriers and thus likely every MVNO as well (several of them were also mentioned).
An extra SIM might not have been helpful in this case.

Jeremy

Can anyone confirm issues with anything besides AT&t? This all seems like
speculation at this point.

Lots still use a physical SIM (not all carriers/devices/OS versions
support eSIM, and also some carriers apparently have exerted more limits
on which devices they'll let you bring with eSIM).

Any citation for anybody other than AT&T (and their other brands, MVNOs,
etc.) being affected? Both Verizon and T-Mobile have said they had no
network issues, except for their customers trying to contact AT&T
customers.

Note: downdetector (and a slew of news articles referencing it as truth)
is not a valid citation.

Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: ATT cellular network 2024-02-22 [ In reply to ]
A lot of the individuals who claimed to have service issues (at least
locally) using TMO and VZW claimed that because they were attempting to
call individuals on AT&T. In two cases of individuals I talked to they had
full voice and data. I haven't seen any confirmation on other providers
being down, and VZW put out a statement stating they were aware of "another
carrier" being down, but they were unaffected.

Example from news:
> Verizon said Thursday morning that the outages are not affecting its
network directly, only customers trying to reach another carrier.
> T-Mobile also said early Thursday that the network didn't suffer an
outage and is operating normally, and Downdetector numbers likely reflect
customers attempting to reach users on other networks.

Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: ATT cellular network 2024-02-22 [ In reply to ]
Verizon did have reports of network issues this morning for a time, where it seemed their HLR (where SIM cards register to on the network) was being flooded by AT&T devices attempting to register on their network (which is what cellular devices will do when it can’t register). But it cleared up quickly.

Other reports of T-Mobile/Verizon outages appear to just be users who can’t contact AT&T users.

What's your business decision: pay for redundancy/backup or be ok with outages? Redundancy is not necessarily a technical issue; it is a business issue.

A lot of the individuals who claimed to have service issues (at least locally) using TMO and VZW claimed that because they were attempting to call individuals on AT&T. In two cases of individuals I talked to they had full voice and data. I haven't seen any confirmation on other providers being down, and VZW put out a statement stating they were aware of "another carrier" being down, but they were unaffected.

Example from news:

> Verizon said Thursday morning that the outages are not affecting its network directly, only customers trying to reach another carrier.

> T-Mobile also said early Thursday that the network didn't suffer an outage and is operating normally, and Downdetector numbers likely reflect customers attempting to reach users on other networks.

Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: ATT cellular network 2024-02-22 [ In reply to ]
Extremely unlikely. We did have a X1.7 class flare 12 hours before the
event but the amount of disruption that would cause would be almost
negligible. It would only really affect satellite communications and
anything using ionospheric skip, and considering the intensity, not for a
long period of time. This just seems like paranoia and attempting to find
correlation where there is none.

There were two flares - an X1.7 and an X1.8. No CME's though, so we aren't
going to get smacked by that. https://spaceweather.com/

** This email was received outside the organization and contains one or more web links. Use caution when following links as they could open malicious web sites. **

What's your business decision: pay for redundancy/backup or be ok with outages? Redundancy is not necessarily a technical issue; it is a business issue.

What's your business decision: pay for redundancy/backup or be ok with outages? Redundancy is not necessarily a technical issue; it is a business issue.

** This email was received outside the organization and contains one or more web links. Use caution when following links as they could open malicious web sites. **

What's your business decision: pay for redundancy/backup or be ok with outages? Redundancy is not necessarily a technical issue; it is a business issue.

Jeremy
