Show processes on a FESX
Hi,

I am wondering how to get a processlist on a FESX.
Had a box with strange load and wanted to look what is causing it.

"show cpu-utilization" lists only the total utilization and there is also
no "show proc cpu" or similar that sounds to me like what I look for.
I found some "show tech-support cpu" in the manuals but this is not
available.

Afaik that is one of the last supported releases for that hardware.

I have a copule FESX's too but couldn't find a way to get process
stats out of it. Any chance you have an sflow monitor? Maybe
enable sflow and collect the data and look for unusual protocols
like too much arp or other things it would have to be processing
in cpu.

Re: Show processes on a FESX [ In reply to ]
"show proc cpu" is limited to router code as far as I am aware. It's like that in the FES code as well. You could alter your config to allow management and load router code to see which process is causing the issue, but in some cases the process causing the issue may not be in the list(like if it is related to management processes).

If the problem is due to high pps of a specific type of traffic you may be better off using dm raw.

Dm raw max 50
Dm raw mode br
Dm raw

If you haven't ruled out loops of one kind or another I would do that first.

Don't do that without console access. The configuration statement
style for setting the switch's management IP address in switch
software is not accepted as valid in the router software.

Chances are a reload will clear this up anyway. FES/FESX in my
experience can run into problems much like this near the 1,000 days
uptime mark. :)

The FES and FESX switches aren't based on the same hardware so you can't always rely on them to have the same issues.

I haven't found high CPU conditions in the FESX line using switch code that weren't due to some traffic anomaly, SNMP, sFlow, or misreporting of the actual usage.

It also depends on what you mean by high. There is an old issue in the FESX line where CPU seems to increase when sFlow is enabled irrespective of the sampling rate. I've seen it in different releases going way back.

Re: Show processes on a FESX [ In reply to ]
Hi,

I wanted to know for interest.
The issue was not service-affecting and I guess also not traffic-related.
I logged in and th e CPU-load increased while I was logged in (I see also
SNMP-queries failed while I was logged in).
I logged out and issue disappeared. I logged in again, everything fine,
load is 1%.
I already saw that behaviour some months earlier and wanted to have the
"sh proc cpu" alternative ready the next time it happens.
The box doesn't have the Layer3 Chip plugged in anyway and is located
400km from me without serial console, so no experiments. ;)

kind regards
Rolf
