IPv6 BGP support?
Hi,

I have a couple of questions.
Have searched the archives and didnt find much, hopefully someone here
can advise.

We are wanting to replace some aging Cisco 7200 series (border routers)
with 10G capable devices.
3 x border routers with 2 full IPv4 feeds (transit) and up to 100 IXP
peers. Traffic levels not very high,
few hundred Mbps traffic through each device.
Doing some research, it seems that the X480 model is most appropriate
(sufficient 10G ports, full BGP table, etc).

I spoke to Extreme about this, however, since it emerged that we need
IPv6 (BGP peering with transit & peering),
the conversation has dried up..

I gather that v6 BGP just doesnt exist yet.
Does anyone know if it is on the road map and when is that likely to be?
Seems that Extreme sales dont know or wont/cant say anything.

Is there perhaps a more appropriate device for this purpose?
Your general opinions on this setup/choice are welcome!

Thanks so much.

Regards,
Andy.

Hi Andy,

We are using the X480's as well in our ISP network and we are currently in the beta for IPv6.
We are currently running about 180 bgp peers on the AMS-iX on an X480 and multiple upstream providers. Not a problem.

IPv6 BGP support is to be expected in version 12.6 for XoS and the target date is around mid July 2011 if I'm correct.

I'm not working for Extreme Networks and things do change, however as I've already seen (and running) the code, I'm pretty sure that this will be release soon.

Regards,
Erik Bais

Try to consider RedBack/Ericsson SmartEdge 600, handles 10G ports and
works with IPv6 (as much as it is possible to test it for today..)
Capacity in a meaning of IPv4/IPv6/whatever routes is really huge..
- disadvantage - 7U size and (for some advantage) - 48V power supply only

Marcin

Andy,

You should be looking at Juniper Networks MX80 or one of it's smaller
variants to do IPv6 and BGP.

Sincerely,

David.

Hi Erik,

Thanks, thats really useful info and sounds like a very similar application to what we need.

Do you know if the X480 model supports Netflow (flowstats) properly?
Im hoping it will integrate with our existing Neflow Analyzer setup..

Thanks again.

Regards,
Andy.

Hi Andy,

The XoS devices support Sflow. Which is better imho and there are way to translate the data to tools that you van also use for netflow, like nfdump etc. They can also work with sflow flows.
