PS/2 keyboard <--> IR Remote interface
It seems as if there are a lot of issues people have with remote
controls, etc.. Havn't recently entered the 'hardwardware hacking'
scene, it shouldn't too hard to make a ps/2 <-> IR remote adaptor.

I can design it such that a remote button press maps to a few keypresses
to turn off a PC -- or just one key-press, and if the bios alows it, to
turn on the PC as well via the keyboard.. Or, if the motherboard has a
Wake On Lan connector, I can tie into there, or even the switch on the
front... I would also probably make it compatible with a sony remote
(very common one), or any universal remote that can mimic a sony one.

As this would interface to the PS/2 port, there would be no need for
software drivers and would work on any OS..

A rough estimate would be that it would cost around $40/50 each to make a
batch of them for people here on the list -- if there is enough
interest (much cheaper with larger volume). Also, if you have any ideas
for features, etc, let me know.

Or, you could get a $25 IR keyboard from Directron, and an $8 learning
remote, and
program your remote to control the keyboard. Then some macros from the
remote
to do what you want.

I am very happy with the IR keyboard I just bought:

http://directron.com/ack573.html

It does the job and is around the same price point. I had looked
for a while for a keyboard with this small form factor under $50.
As other people have noted, it should in principle be possible to
use a learning remote to learn the keypress codes and use a remote
from then on (I have not tried with this particular one though).

I didn't realise you could control an IR keyboard with a learning
remote.. but that does sounds much easier than what I proposed.
Has this setup worked for others?

yeah -- Chicony KB-9820 (~$30) + Sony RM-VL1000 (~$40)

This isn't the cheapest combo but I wanted the remote
to replace my other remotes. I also heard this remote
worked well with IR keyboards (it does).

Yeah, that's the one I bought. Works great, is cheap, and matches my
cheap black
case from Directron.
