mythweb colorized show categories
I'm getting closer and closer to finishing the new mythweb, and am at a
point where I need some help from the user community. Show categories
(Scifi, Romance, Action, Reality, etc.) are printed by the various
listing companies, and seem to be broken down into a huge number,
especially when you consider different languages.

To make this a little more manageable (right now, it's one style sheet
entry for each category, and I keep finding more and more new ones as my
provider assigns them), I'd like to set up a regex system to match these
"overall" categories to a smaller subset (say, 20-30 instead of 80-100)
of "official myth(web) show categories" so we can establish a standard
for designing new themes/skins for mythweb.

Anyway, for anyone who wants to help (especially those of you in
non-english-speaking locales), I need to come up with these "overall"
categories (in english), and then assign matches according to what the
providers list them as (this is where non-english-locales will be
helpful - so that we know "deportes" or "Spielen" or whatever matches to
the "sports" style sheet specification).

This will be an ever-growing list, as the providers will undoubtedly
continue adding new categories (eg. "Crime" vs. "Crime/Mystery" vs.
"Mystery").

Anyway, help appreciated..

-Chris

That all depends on work (big deadline coming up, overtime needed),
whether I go away this weekend, and how much time my wife can tolerate
being without me. :) Oh, and whether or not the code is misbehaving.

Basically, I need to finish the search stuff (hopefully tonight), the
category css stuff, the one-day single-channel view, and the movie
listings page.

The last two are actually pretty easy now that I have the program object
as complete as I do, so I'm hoping sometime next week.

Ok, after much (ok, not that much) deliberation, I've narrows things
down to what I feel are a pretty inclusive list of show categories.
Please keep in mind that things like "Dance" would fall under
"Art_Music", "Cooking" under "Food" etc. If you think I've left
something important out, don't hesitate to let me know - though I've
left things at a nice round 32, I don't really mind adding more (or at
least being pointed to a category that some more difficult things might
fall into).

Again, if you have non-english info about categories, please let me
know. I have a handful of Spanish ones that were in myth's xml file,
but I doubt that's all of them.

and what is "Adult"? it's a bit more broad of a term, but porn falls
into there. Besides, all of the provider info I've seen calls it
"adult".

Yeah, that's fine. Though I guess I should have been a bit more clear.
I'm looking for "official" responses, not just mere translations (though
I'm assuming that most of the translations you gave me will be fine).
To get at this info, from the mysql client, type:

SELECT DISTINCT category FROM program;

That will bring up a list of every category that your tv listing
provider has given to myth. And since I don't speak very good german
(my spanish is still pretty good even though I haven't spoken
fluently/regularly in over 10 years), translations from those (any
language) into English would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help,

-Chris

How about taking a look at this list for movies?

http://us.imdb.com/Sections/Genres/

Action
Adventure
Animation
Comedy
Crime
Documentary
Drama
Musical
Family
Fantasy
Film-Noir
Horror
Musical
Mystery
Romance
Sci-Fi
Short
Thriller
War
Western

Most are already in the list below, but I would at least add Animation
(don't think that Animation = Children) and separate SciFi and Fantasy
(they're completely different for me).

LOL

Hmm ...

Bi, Tri, Try ...

BTW, I could never quite get the difference between Action and Thriller
... but this is useless chatter on a list that's already too prolific.

Action = Bruce Willis, Thriller = Michael Jackson :)

Actually, I'd probably group Thriller more with Horror than Action. But
on that note, do people think it deserves its own category? Or should
it be grouped with one of the aforementioned (and which one)?

Again, the thing is that this isn't really a list of "should-be"
categories, it's a list of those that the listing providers provide.
Unfortunately, most listing providers make no distinction between scifi
and fantasy, and so there's no way for me to pick them apart on the back
end. Also remember, these are just color codes, not the actual
categories of the shows.

I'll look into what the cartoon network "adult" shows are labeled as,
since I do agree that there is a lot of non-children animation these
days.
