i810/Chrontel TV-Out
So, I've got a couple of these HP Digital Entertainment Center devices
that were intended to be a stereo-component style MP3 player, but HP
discontinued them. The hardware is pretty much a basic PC inside a nice
set-top case with a great VFD front panel and built-in remote (the remote
codes are seen as keyboard events, so it works really nicely with MythTV).

I've got MythTV installed on one with a PVR-250 card on top of Mandrake
9.1, and everything works beautifully when I'm using the VGA out to a
monitor. If I hook up a TV, everything still works great, except for
playback of recorded shows or videos. I get sound, but the video goes
blank.

The video card in this hardware is an i810-based device, with a Chrontel
(7007, I think) chip for TV-Out. Is there some reason why this
combination won't work for full-screen video playback?

I've been working on this for a couple weeks now, and I'm out of ideas.
I really would like to get this working, because it's a great box for a
PVR (which is kind of why I bought them in the first place). Any pointers
or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'm amazed at how nicely this project is coming along - great work,
guys!

You don't say how you configured it and what exactly happens. Did you do
anything specific to configure the TV out or does it just mirror the
monitor output? Which resolution? Or does the monitor go black when you
use the TV out?

With "everything still works", you mean X apps? With "the video goes
blank", you mean the MythTV window only or the whole display?

One general gotcha is that the video (and 3D) acceleration for some
cards only works on one display, not on both. Sometimes, you can choose
which display should use the acceleration, sometimes it's bound to the
first display (which could be the monitor, not the TV out). If you try
to play a video using video accel on a display without video accell, the
relevant part of the scrren goes black or blue. That may be the reason
in your case.

Yo can try playing with nvtv, it supports tweaking the CH7007 when used
with an i810:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/nv-tv-out/nvtv/doc/overview.txt?rev=1.5&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup

I'm not sure that'll really help with your problem, though. From what
you told, it looks a bit like Xv support is whacked up - but Xv works
fine with X 4.3.0 on my i810, try updating X if that's not the version
you're using.
