Mandrake91, Lirc and the PVR250....Bad combo?
I'm running on Mandrake 9.1 with a PVR-250 and for the life of my I
can't get a response from irw after installing lirc. I've been
struggling with this for a couple of days now.

I've followed all of the myth and lirc doc very carefully. Lirc
compiles fine (latest CVS code). I've added the lircd.conf (from ivtv)
to /etc. I've started the lircd_dev and lirc_i2c modules and added the
appropriate lines to the modules.conf file.

I just can't get anything to happen when I start irw. It just sits
there, not reporting even a single character as I feverishly press the
buttons on the remote (the new light gray remote). There aren't even
any errors in the /var/log/lircd file!

I know that the remote and receiver both work because I dual-boot to
WindowsXP and they run fine over there.

Does anyone have this combo? Is there a trick to it?

Thanks,

Aaron

Someone just posted this on the lirc list, installing pvr-250 on
Mandrake 9. They said they had to use 0.7.0pre1.

<snip>
OK, I FIXED IT!!! WooHoo! irw now detects remote presses!

The secret is...(what's it worth to you?) ...

You HAVE to download the source from CVS, and build that. Its version
0.7.0pre1
See http://www.lirc.org/cvs.html for instructions. (But you DO have to
"make install" at the end, which they don't mention.)

Thanks for the link! Funny thing, I found that post last night (he
actually posted here on Myth as well). Unfortunately I've tried his
solution, and it hasn't helped. He actually appears to be using RH, not
Mandrake.

I've tried everything I can think of......

Thanks again,

Aaron

I personally had problems with lirc and Mandrake 9.1. I found I had to
delete the Mandrake modules, then reinstall the lirc.
See if you have the lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/3rdparty/lirc ,
if so delete it and try again.

Ahh, I hadn't thought of that (although it makes sense now because I did
read something about the default Lirc modules being broken in
Mandrake91).

I'm going to give that a shot tonight. Thanks for the tip. I'll let
you know how it goes.

Thanks again,

Aaron

Adrian, I don't know you, but you're now my hero.

After deleting the "native" Mandrake Lirc modules from the lib path (and
reinstalling Lirc and rebooting), it now works!

I finally see those sweet IRW characters flashing down the screen.

Thanks,

Aaron

OK, there's always a catch.

PVR-250 card, lirc 0.6.6 running on Mandrake 9.1. modprobe the ivtv
driver, then modprobe the lirc_i2c driver. Check in dmesg that the
Hauppauge IR chip is found.

When using the "old" remote, (black, not a whole lot of buttons) with
the lircd.conf file from the ivtv distribution, the remote works.
irw shows the keypresses.

When using the new remote, (grey, lots of buttons, some colored) with
the lircd-g.conf file from the ivtv distribution (renamed to
/etc/lircd.conf), the remote _doesn't_ work. No response from irw.

I guess this is why some people's remotes work and some don't.

I'll see if lirc 0.7pre1 works with the new remote and report back.

It does. What I had to do:

First, do a /etc/rc.d/init.d/lircd stop. Uninstall the old lirc
0.6.6 RPM. If you don't, you're going to run into problems later on
because the Mandrake-supplied programs will be "higher up" in the
path and will get executed instead of the ones made by 0.7pre1.

Next, to compile lirc CVS I had to upgrade automake. urpme automake,
urpmi automake1.7

You're also going to need to install the kernel-source.

Ran the ./autogen.sh and setup program, chose "TV Cards", Hauppauge
(newer i2c), then ran make and make install

I used the lircd.conf file that comes in the lirc CVS for the
Hauppuage and put it into /etc

Made sure that the /lib/modules/kernel-version/blahblah/3rdparty/lirc
gets moved out of /lib/modules so that the depmod doesn't get
confused (if the urpme doesn't get rid of it)

Did a modprobe ivtv _then_ a modprobe lirc_i2c

On my system, this gives me a /dev/lirc/0

Ran lircd from the command line to make sure that it works:
$ lircd --device=/dev/lirc/0 -n

Ran irw from another window to confirm that it works, and it does.

Added this to rc.local:
echo "Modprobing PVR-250"
modprobe ivtv
echo "Modprobing lirc"
modprobe lirc_i2c
echo "Starting lircd"
lircd --device=/dev/lirc/0

Then created a ~/.lircrc that I liked, and now it's running in the
Pundit in my livingroom.
