Display on HDTV
Anyone else have an HDTV? I have some questions.

Right now I'm using my Shuttle XPC's video out (RCA) to my TV. The
onboard tv-out is pretty lame (or I just haven't figured out the right
sis X driver settings), so I'm thinking of taking the video out from the
VGA and converting to component (R, G, B) video.

This is what I'm thinking:

1) Set the X server resolution to HDTV resolution (1080 x 607).
2) Take VGA out into a converter box ($40 or so on Ebay).
3) Use composite in on my HDTV.

Anyone else doing this? Which converter box did you buy?

Now, please note I'm not asking about recording HDTV feeds (that's been
discussed to death), but I just want to get the Myth GUI displayed at my
TV's true resolution. Right now it doesn't look very good using the
TV-out (NTSC).

One last question; anyone using the sis driver (Shuttle XPC) have some
recommended driver option settings to get the best quality? Right now I
have some weird issues with the color red slowly moving. It appears
banded, and the bands move like a slow refresh rate. Quite odd.

Thanks!

Im using an ATI card to output 848x480 to a rgb to component out box to my
hdtv tv. it works great. Beware of timings though. I found it easiest to
tune my timings using powerstrip (windows) . It will give you the right
mode lines to pop in your xconfig so things will look right.

Re: Display on HDTV [ In reply to ]
There's not a lot of information out there on getting HDTV receivers to work
with X, and lots of the information I have come across is just plain wrong.

My Mitsubishi WS-65807 accepts 1920x1080i, but it is (like many HD
receivers) very picky about the frequencies it will lock. Your hfreq, total
vertical lines and dot clock are the critical parameters. 74.25 MHz dot
clock and 34.75 KHz HSync are standard for the 1920x1080i rez. I can provide
you with other resolutions.

The only ModeLine that works for 1920x1080i is one I derived from the
ATSC/HDTV standards and from some time on an oscilloscope.

Modeline "1920x1080i" 74.25 1920 1960 2008 2200 1080 1090 1110 1125
+vsync -hsync interlace

Now, several graphics cards accept the modeline but would not render
properly (ATI 9000 and an old NV4 come to mind).

Lately, I've been trying to reverse engineer ATI's component adapter which
is a nice cheap alternative to the expensive (Audio Authority) signal
converters. It seems to require some DDC (i2c) codes to get it to work.

It's also possible to build a relatively inexpensive circuit to to the same.
