Linux Distribution of choice
What is the Linux Distribution of choice for running MythTV. There has been
talk of issues with RedHat 8 and 9, what other distros are in use, do any of
them make it trivial to get MythTV into operation?

My own experience is that I am fighting with RedHat 9 to get it to do what I
want.

I've had no trouble with rhl9 (once I switched to blackbox instead of
gnome). Many people here suggest Mandrake 9.1.

You could try Knoppix, it's a bootable Debian based CD that can be
installed to your harddisk. It has one of the most outstanding hardware
detection known to the linux world. It doesn't know some of the TV-cards
though, since it uses a vanilla kernel with only one patch, to support xfs.

MythTV is developed on Debian, and there are MythTV debs around.

Red Hat 8 and 9 complained about too much when I used them. Switched to
Mandrake 9.1, and it's much more co-operative.

Same here. I am a RH fan (for better or worse) but it just didn't seem to
be the best distro for Myth. I've found that Mandrake makes for an easy
Myth install. I don't care for the look of the default Mandrake
interface, but that's all configurable anyway, so....

I'm using SuSE 8.0 for mythtv, but in my case, it really doesn't matter since
I'm doing everything in /usr/local and relying very little on packages
supplied by SuSE.

Mythtv and ivtv are all much too new to have been on my SuSE DVD (from last
year). lirc is on there but the version is too old for the remote for the
Hauppauge 350. I even installed qt from source since the version which came
with SuSE 8.0 was too old for mythtv.

Some day soon, I may upgrade to SuSE 8.2, but this stuff will still be in
/usr/local for a while.

Later,

Andy
