Well, If you were wanting to get the backend running on Mac OSX it
certainly looks possible now.

This site has a port of the BT878 driver to Mac OSX, it doesn't support
the tuner yet and only does V4L support, not native Mac OS
frame-grabbing. However it would be one of the keys to a backend on that
platform, possibly all that is needed(I don't know about endianness issues).
