Anyone know of a way to get some sort of digial audio balun?

I like the s-video, but then you loose your 5.1 dolby digital.

Re: s-video over cat 5 [ In reply to ]
Hrmm.. Why over complicate the issue? If your audio card supports it,
use a toslink cable (fiber optic).. Most modern stereo's support 'em,
and they're virtually lossless..

Cheap place to get 'em (and anything else cable or connector related,
I've found):

RE: s-video over cat 5 [ In reply to ]
You can also just get a 75 or 100 foot s-video cable..
At www.cablestogo.com, it's just $43 and $56 respectively..
Which is probably cheaper than two balun's and the hassle to go with
it..

Re: s-video over cat 5 [ In reply to ]
Please excuse my foot in mouth....

SVideo isn't designed to run at those lengths, but further investigation
reveals that the cables Mark is talking about is double shielded and it
also separates the signals to combat signal loss and interference.

At this point it is unclear to me what would work better. I wonder if
the baluns convert the signal to a digital signal or if they simply
'convert' the analog signal to something that is more transportable.

Perhaps someone can comment and help address my ignorance.

RE: s-video over cat 5 [ In reply to ]
Hi,

When I built my house I put all of the electronics
( DSS, Receiver, DVD, etc ) in a central closet.
Research at the time ( 5 years ago ) put a 70 foot
limit on an S-Video cable. My longest run was 120
feet. I found some adapters that would take the
S-Video and split the signals into two Quad-shielded
co-ax. Ran the two lines of co-ax 120 feet, then
used another adapter to combine them back into
S-Video.
Works great!

If someone needs a source for these adaptors, I
think I have a bookmark on my home system ( I'm out
of town this week ). Email me directly and I send
you a link when I get home this weekend.

Dave,

Here's one solution:

http://www.hometech.com/video/svideo.html

This is S-Video to BNC and back to S-Video. That runs
to the BNC wall connectors. Behind the twin
connectors,
I put two Quad-Shielded RG6 cable. Ran it about 120
feet. Then reversed it back to S-Video.

While the house was under construction, I connected
two 60 Ft S-video cables together to see what the
reception would be like. Wasn't good. This solution
works well. No signal drop-off that I can see.

Mark
