Cannot record/hear sound (line in muted, recording source set)

Hi,

Rather frustrated!

I'm literally pulling my hair out now after an afternoon of frustration,
which must be surely down to my incompetency!

Sorry this is so long, but I hope somebody might have some idea what's
wrong if I provided enough contextual info.

I've done pretty well thus far to get everything kind of working. I'm
using

- RedHat8, 2.4.18-26.8
- Hercules SmartTV Stereo (working with XawTV, sound and video)
- mythtv (CVS, from earlier this morning)
- alsa sound drivers (0.9.0rc8c)
- KDE 3.0.3-8RedHat (duplex disabled, or else mythtv 'watch live tv'
hangs with no video or sound)
- SoundBlaster Live Value (5.1)

I had a hack about this morning and added support for tv_grab_fi into
the setup and filldatabase and I thought I was going great guns when I
managed to get a picture in myth.

But alas, now I've run into trouble.

I can get sound and audio in XawTV but of course, that's going the
analogue route.

I have myth up and running and I'm able to watch livetv, but of course,
its playing the sound from the analogue input. So following the docs and
the faq, I muted the line in, set it as the recording source, fired up
xawtv and then tried running aplay /dev/dsp in another terminal window,
but I get a bunch of output (but no sound:)

I've tried Btaudio too, but I don't really understand how to configure
it correctly (or even if its compatible with my setup).

I can play sound okay using aplay.

I cannot record sound using that basic KDE wav file recording app. If I
start it recording (even when Line is the recording source) it doesn't
record anything. Muted or otherwise, it still doesn't record.

Not sure if its related, but I currently have to su to root and then
modprobe tvaudio every time I boot up in order to get even analogue tv
sound. I tried adding "alias tvaudio" to my /etc/modules.conf but that
doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

I've played with all the mixer settings (using alsamixer) but I can't
work out what's wrong. Here's the amixer output

Hi Cedar

Thanks, but I think that's correct - you need to disable the KDE stuff
or else MythTV cannot open /dev/dsp and therefore "Watch live tv" just
hangs.

I managed to fix it with the help of Dan Brown who dropped me a mail
off-list. Basically, I'd not muted the "Mic" channel, and also, he
suggested raising the volume of the Captur(e) mixer channel (which was
already at max). I also set it (the Captur(e) channel) as a capture
device just to be safe - all using alsamixer.

It now works a charm and I can finally enjoy the product of the mythtv
developer's hard work. How stupid am I...

One minor (unrelated problem) is that the layout of the TV Guide is a
bit up the spout on my machine. I'll try and host a few screen shots and
see if anybody can spot the obvious mistake. My first port of call (when
I get round to looking at this) is the font sizes in the setup...

from what I understand, if you are trying to use one sound card both to
capture and play sound you _need_ duplex.. The only way you can get
around the duplex requirement (that I know of) with just one sound card
is if you use Btaudio and capture directly from your capture card.

Hi there,
I got one of these Hercules SmartTV cards recently too. WRT to the
audio, I read somewhere that msp3400 module will let you get stereo
sound out of the card. Also, I found a patch for bttv which supports
this card ( card=100 ). I posted all the links and how I got the modules

I never managed to get xawtv going though. It can never find the
grabber device. tvtime works fine though. I'd be interested to know how
you got that working.
I spent sometime trying to make mythfilldatabase work with tv_grab_fi
also. But, I was trying with 0.7. What did you need to do to get it to
support tv_grab_fi?

from what I understand, if you are trying to use one sound card both to
capture and play sound you _need_ duplex.. The only way you can get
around the duplex requirement (that I know of) with just one sound card
is if you use Btaudio and capture directly from your capture card.

I just sent a patch for tv_grab_fi to the dev list. I hope it is
correct. Its working on my system, so that's something I guess.

I have the Hercules SmartTV Stero card. I managed to find a patch for
bttv from the video4linux mailing list for this particular card. Have a
search on google and I think you can find it. With this change, CARDLIST
is updated to 101 entries (you obviously need the latest version too).
101 is 'our' card. That sort the picture side of things out (obviously,
you need to configure your modules.conf appropriately).

I didn't have to do anything with regards to the msp3400. I did install
alsa (latest version). I no doubt only have it working in mono then, but
it is stable. XawTV is fine.

My modules.conf looks like this:

options bttv card=101 radio=0
options tuner card=5
options tvaudio
alias char-major-81 bttv

Can you elaborate on that msp3400 thing? What does this actually do?:

pre-install bttv modprobe -k tuner; modprobe -k msp3400 debug=1

I do have a problem whereby despite adding tvaudio to my modules.conf
(see above) I still have to su to root, and then "modprobe tvaudio" each
and every boot in order to get sound with xawtv. I wish I knew what to
do to fix that.

xawtv -hwscan lists the following:

I read that the msp3400 provides stereo sound, but I can't find where I
read that. As for the preinstall line, well I think that's a Gentoo
linux specific command telling modprobe to preload .

I built qt with mysql support, but I still get this error:

$ setup/setup

Unless you're totally building a linux system from scratch and not
using a distribution, you really shouldn't be rebuilding qt. Did you
look through the HOWTO referenced on the main mythtv.org page?

I'm using Gentoo linux (www.gentoo.org) - it's a source based linux
disty. Recompiling qt is a one liner - and a long wait ;-)
