Is this a design choice, or is it one of the future features of MythUI ?

Likewise, it would be nice to be able to applyt different buttonlist formats
to the lists in a buttontree -- to make the first list narrower than the
second, for example.

It's a "one guy doing all the work" feature. Feel free to improve
upon what's there :).
