End of Recording crash
MythTV 0.1.9 on Gentoo Linux...

At the end of a recording, which I am watching too, the screen freezes! Now,
if I exit and go back to Watching Live TV all's OK BUT if I leave it and
don't touch nothing the frontend and X is killed, I believe, by the
following;

Mar 25 09:26:57 localhost kernel: cdrom: open failed.
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: oom-killer: gfp_mask=0x601d2, order=0
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: Mem-info:
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: DMA per-cpu:
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: cpu 0 hot: low 2, high 6, batch 1 used:4
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: cpu 0 cold: low 0, high 2, batch 1 used:1
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: Normal per-cpu:
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: cpu 0 hot: low 62, high 186, batch 31
used:163
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: cpu 0 cold: low 0, high 62, batch 31 used:39
Mar 25 19:04:47 localhost kernel: HighMem per-cpu: empty
---//---
Mar 25 19:04:49 localhost kernel: Out of Memory: Killed process 9337 (evilwm).
---//---
Mar 25 19:04:49 localhost kernel: Out of Memory: Killed process 9345
(mythfrontend)
....

See it's been running all day with no messages then at 19:04 it's all killed
which is 4 min after my recording ended and the screen frooze.

Other than the usual "why don't you just exit then go back to live tv"
suggestions has anyone else suffered this? If have to acutally get into a
small room and use the keyboard to restart x then mythtv... such a pain...

Criggie

512meg, it's run flawlessly except for this and the nVidia xid crash which I
solved by using a FX5200 card.

Re: End of Recording crash [ In reply to ]
Well the machine appears to have run out of ram... those syslog messages
are telling you that. Its not Mythtv having a problem

Try sshing to the machine and run
watch --diff==cul free
while you do stuff as normal on the console.

I'd expect to see something like this on a 512 Mb mythbox. It has 500 Mb
of swap too, but thats almost not used. the 177828 Kbyte figure is how
much it is really using right now.
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 514512 493872 20640 0 0 316044
-/+ buffers/cache: 177828 336684
Swap: 497972 88 497884

Maybe you have a memory leak in something?

512MB is s'posed to be ideal - plenty for buffering with none completely
wasted.

Sounds like a memory leaking bug to me, maybe in mythtv

I haven't seen anything on the main lists about memory leak issues
with MythTV and I haven't seen anything like that myself (0.19 on
Gentoo). I'd be inclined to look elsewhere first.

Is mythfrontend's memory use stable or increasing?

Thats fine 0 your box is only using 45.5 Mb of ram. It would be
interesting to watch top *as* mythtv does the silly stuff.

It doesn't seem to be leaking memory at the moment.

Agreed - 933 Mb of virtual is getting up there. Did you compile myth 0.19
from source or install someone's package?

Maybe its one of the linked libraries that is causing the problem.... but
the problem is definitely a memory leak.

Do you have anu other funny options on, like filters?

These are probably leftover errors that the frontend has created. Just
ignore.

Didn't you also just install that DVB card...? :) Was it doing this
before the card install?

Cheers

Criggie

Compiled from source as I'm using Gentoo linux.... no out of the ordinary
compiling options as I'm more interested in stability than outright
performance...

Howard

Yes I've got the new DVB card installed but it's just sitting there as I don't
the dish on the roof yet...

Myth 0.19.1 looks' to be almost out and here's a fix that could be what I'm
experiencing;

Fixed program transition in LiveTV watching

It has been doing this since 0.19.0 never with 0.18.x so I can only hope it
get's fixed cause I'm not too sure how I can fix it as there's not enough
info in the log's... Just have to remember to exit then go back into live tv
if it freezes...

What USE flags are you using?

I'm using 0.19 on Gentoo and I installed it pretty much as soon as it
was available so I definitely don't have any fixes you don't...
