TV-Out on a big screen TV
I'm piecing together a new box for mythtv. I need to buy a video card
that can output to my 43" 9:16 TV with excellent quality (well, at
least better than the VCR.) From the mailing list, it seems a few
people are using the GeForce2 MX 400. I also read that Isaac was using
such a card before upgrading to a Gainward GeForce4 Ti4200. (Why did
you need to upgrade, Isaac?)

Does anyone have MythTV setup with a big screen TV? Is the GeForce2 MX
400 robust enough to handle the output? Would a GeForce4 Ti4200 improve
MythTV's performance?

Thanks,
Jason

Jason,
TV Out quality sucks. Get a breakout box that converts VGA -> component
video and you will have much better picture.

Old card didn't have a tv-out, and I wanted to play Morrowind and Neverwinter
Nights at a decent framerate =)

I'd suggest looking at one of the dual head Matrox G550, TV output is quite
good, I have a client running it to his 6ft projection TV. This is under
windows mind you, however, last I looked it works fine under linux.

So, if I'm going to be outputting the signal to an HDTV display, I'll
need a transcoder to convert the signal from VGA to component video for
optimal results.

PC -> video card -> transcoder -> HDTV =)

However, some video cards will do the job of getting the signal to the
transcoder better, right? A card with more memory will be capable of
transmitting a signal at a higher resolution to the transcoder.

I'm not sure how the requirements for MythTV translate into recommended
specifications for the various components. Do I need a beefy video
card? Is a GeForce2 MX 400 suitable?

Is anyone else watching MythTV on an HDTV display?

Thanks,
Jason

P.S. I think it'd be cool to have a page on mythtv.org devoted to user
setups, so we can show off our MythTV (boxes | boxen).

Jason,
Get a Radeon 8500 and a Audio Authority transcoder and you will be set.

You do not need a beefy video card. Spend your money on a faster processor,
it will be more benefit for you.

I will be using a CRT projector, which takes RGB input directly. (And
doesn't take up half the floorspace!) But these days I'd think a DLP
projector would be best; I just got a cheap deal several years ago on
this one and it works well enough. I have used Xawtv with it for a
while, and have a DVD player with RGB outputs too. The convergence drifts
a lot though, and that is much worse than signal degradation due to
passing through an NTSC encoding.

It's unfortunate that they picked a different standard for TV-type
component video, although I'm beginning to understand it has something to
do with better noise immunity.

That sounds fun.
