I'm new...
Hello-

I'm new to MythTV and to LINUX actually -

I'm hoping to install Red Hat8 on a PIII 800MHz with
256megs of ram. I've got a new ATI all in wonder and
have found that the software bundled with it is crap.
(It never starts up to record my programs for one
thing). So the switch to linux and mythtv is a
welcomed project/hobby for me. I'm surrounded by
linux friends who are supporting my decision and will
help me that that part of the deal... but we don't
know much about the compressions, optimal resolutions
and video in general.

There are so many great things about MythTV, but I'm
concerned that this machine won't hack it. Any tips
about getting the most out of this set up would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

You won't be able to watch and record at the same time with only the
all-in-wonder card under Linux due to a limitation in the driver.

I have a similar rig. Everything ended up working pretty well, but I
ended up buying a hauppage WinTV-GO for $49 from compusa. The
all-in-wonder is not fully supported by linux yet, and will not allow
you to record and watch tv at once.

Does this mean that you could not do the pause while watching thing with an
all-in-wonder? Several friends and I are in the process of building mythtv
boxes from the ground up and we were planning on using a-i-w cards. If this
is a problem we'd like to know up front. Thanks.

Doug

you can't use all-in-wonder cards if you want full mythtv
functionality. Use a cheap tv capture card instead.
Hauppage Win TV works for me.

Just saw on /. that ATI has released binary drivers for linux. Maybe
this'll fix the problems with myth.

I don't believe that ATI's binary drivers support v4l.

Could be. I don't have one so I can't test, but I figured I'd post it
for those that do to try.

Apparently, it is only for the Radeon 8500 and higher, and does not support
TV-out.

I've setup 5 boxes with Ati TV Wonders which work flawlessly with the bttv
kernel drivers. With all this experience I've yet to get a AIW wokring with
gatos. IMHO use a Brooktree based PCI tuner card like the TV Wonder/
Hauupage if you want an "easy to set up " PVR solution, for use with or
without mythtv.
