Installing Firefox 4 beta 2 in N900 - howto?
I'm experiencing problems installing Firefox 4 beta 2 on my device. I
currently don't have Firefox/fennec installed at all. So here's what I do to
get latest beta installed:

1) Go to http://firefox.com/m/beta in N900's browser - click "Download for
Maemo" button.
2) App Manager starts and prompts to add new "Mozilla multi Beta Catalogue".
I confirm so App Manager takes its usual time to do stuff before I get
prompt to install Firefox 1.1 (!!!) which comes from "Ovi" repository,
rather than Firefox 4.0b2 from Mozilla repo.
3) I cancel that installation, go to catalogue manager, disable Ovi
repository and completely delete "Mozilla beta" repo as well. App Manager
again takes time to refresh repos in the background.
4) I go back to firefox.com/m/beta and restart whole procedure.
5) When App Manager kicks in, I get prompt to add "Mozilla beta" catalogue,
I confirm that but then I get... "Unable to donwload fennec. Application
package not found". :-o

What gives?! Did anyone experience similar issues and got workaround?

I also had plenty of issues installing Fennec Beta on Maemo.

What I do is resort to terminal.

Yesteday after App Manager added the Beta catalog and said Fennec was
already installed (it was, but B1) I went to Terminal and typed:

apt-get install fennec

and it quits saying "Silently failing to process handler" (or
something of that sort).

Then I typed:

apt-get upgrade

and that happily upgraded it.

However, last time I had Fennec installed from the Ovi Repo I had to
play a lot with apt-get in order to install the Beta.

Actually it still gives me the same error if I try :

apt-get install fennec

it quits with:

E: Handler silently failed

It's a long-running problem. I haven't been able to install from
Mozilla repos in what seems like a year. I don't know if anyone is
able to install from their repos from App Manager. Maybe if someone
can we can figure out what is different about their setup.

Only solution for me is to download the deb file and install with dpkg.

Just a quick search of term "N900" shows many related bugs, there are
probably others I didn't notice:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=557307
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=546835
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=532895
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=565709
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=591605

I really wish someone could figure it out. I don't know why Mozilla
can't get a repo working for one of the most high-profile N900 apps,
but everyone else doesn't seem to have any problems setting up working
repos.

I would /love/ to be able to auto-update Fennec nightlies from app manager.

That's what I'll probably do at the end but I'm feeling dirty just thinking about dpkg to install packages.

Interesting thing is that these nightly builds updated from repo *did* work for me sometime ago (in pre-fennec 1.1 era), before I decided to get rid of fennec from my N900 altogether.

The good news is that it is worth it, the latest Fennec nightlies are
really pretty good quality and browsing is very fast. (as long as you
don't need Flash...)

It used to work for me, too, I think it stopped working in early 2010
sometime, maybe around PR1.1.1 release,

The upgrade just popped up for me as a regular software update. I
wouldn't recommend it, however. The app is so laggy for me that it's
unusable.

Installed Fennec 4b2 with dpkg yesterday and unfortunately I can't share
your enthusiasm. Application went back to its habits from pre-1.1 era, when
pretty much every tap on screen was followed by huge lag, lasting anything
between 1 second and ~1 minute (sic!). The only more-or-less usable version
of Firefox Mobile is 1.1, where lags were somehow reduced to acceptable
levels, but only when I've had less than 2-3 tabs opened at a time. Having
said that, MicroB, albeit having lot of room for improvements too, is still
my browser of choice...
