Checking email takes minutes
Hi all,

On my N900, since a few weeks checking email on my POP3 account takes
forever, regardless of the type of connection I'm currently using.
Mostly, it fails a downloading new messages. I first thought it might
be that I had to upgrade the firmware, but after flashing the device,
the issue is still the same. I do have quite a few emails sitting in
my inbox (27.8 MB), could this be the problem? I've tried to empty the
inbox but doing a select all (Ctrl-A) and then remove doesn't in fact
remove any messages, although removing single messages works (is there
another way to empty the inbox? From the command line?). Perhaps
needless to say, I can check email as ususal with my other clients. I
even access my email account's webmail interface from my N900 without
problems.

Any suggestions?

/h

Re: Checking email takes minutes [ In reply to ]
Hi,

First of all, my apologies for posting twice on the same subject. I
thought my first message got lost when a gmail session crashed on me.

I'm still having the same problems after emptying my inbox. Checking
my server for new messages takes minutes (the wheel is spinning) but
no mail is downloaded despite new messages on the server. At the same
time I can log in and see my new messages in a webmail session. I
guess the next thing to do is to delete the settings for this account
and re-enter it. Anyone else has a better idea? I'm really annoyed
with this as I'm usually relying on my N900 checking my email for me.

best,

/h

So after having deleted the email account and reentered it again I'm
still having the same problem checking my email. Sometimes the device
just keeps spinning the little status wheel and displaying a message
in a yellow bar saying "Updating". If I reboot the device, most of the
time I can check my messages. Has no one else has experienced this or
something similar?

For me the device is close to useless to me if I can't work with email
in an efficient way on it. Any suggestions?

See also Bug 10357, which seems to be a variant of problems with
polling POP3 accounts. Is there a ticket for your probelsm, too?

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10357

It seems like there is something badly broken. There is no respons eby
Nokia in the ticket, so no idea if and at which time a fix will happen.

Thanks Tim. The bug you are referring to sounds like the one I'm experiencing.

Yesterday I received an SMS from Nokia saying there was new software
for my N900. Among the improvements was video calls with Skype and
GTalk as well as updates to email functions. Hoping this update would
fix my problem I went to the application manager only to find out
there was no update available. Now it's been more than a day since the
message and there is still no update. Anyone here knows more about
this?

I stopped using my N810 after modest stopped working in a reliable
manner and I'm slightly discouraged by the way things are with my
N900. I'm still hoping for a fix.

best,

/H

Please see the thread "[My Nokia Tip] 17 June 2010: Download Nokia
Software Updater (was: new update available)" on talk.maemo.org:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=56442

From what I can tell (without having seen it), the text message from
My Nokia was poorly worded. I believe the message was intended to
promote Nokia Software Updater, not a specific update. There's no new
firmware for the N900 beyond PR1.2, not yet at least, and it's a bit
early for a PR1.3 or even a PR1.2.1 to realistically be impending.

That's right, it seems the thread is discussing the same SMS I got. I
do believe, however, that the SMS was meant to promote a specific
software update as it listed features such as "video calls for
Skype..." etc. Oh well, thanks for the clarification!
