See the Linux 2.4 Netfilter Hacking HOWTO. Unfortunately, it has
disappeared from
netfilter.gnumonks.org, so you'll have to try another site, or search
for it at the
Google search engine. IIRC, the HOWTO contains lots of stuff on how to
properly code
and register matches for iptables. IMHO, though, reading code is much
better.
