power management on dell inspiron 5000 laptop
Hello folks,

I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 which I just put gentoo linux 2004.2
on. I want to get power management working on this machine. While
web-searching for experience reports on the same or similar platform,
I noticed a couple of claims from 2003 that ACPI doesn't work with
Dell laptops and that one has to use APM instead. Is this still true?
I am running a 2.6.9 kernel if that makes a difference and I have
a single boot environment.

Looking at the "Power Management Guide" I see that it mostly deals
with ACPI. Any similar guide for APM or other resource that I could
consult to get this working. FWIW, the machine ran RH6.2 for the last
4+1/2 years and the power management that 6.2 came with more or less
worked (there were a few instances where it wouldn't wake up from
a suspend but still, It was better than nothing).

Thanks in advance,
Anouk.
