strange DNS problem
I've been trying with firefox to connect to my.calendars.net/tremont
this evening. My gentoo workstation cannot resolve the IP.
Just for the heck of it I fired up my vmware windows xp box and it loaded
the page just fine. The IP on the XP box is set manually, using my linksys
router for dns.
on my workstation i have manual ip config and i'm using the linksys router
AND my ISP's dns servers.
here's my /etc/resolve.conf
domain lowmips.com
nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 206.74.254.2
nameserver 204.116.57.2
search lowmips.com

when i try dig my.calendars.net, here's what i get
scorpaen@teh scorpaen $ dig my.calendars.net
;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode.
;; Connection to 192.168.1.1#53(192.168.1.1) for my.calendars.net failed:
connection refused.

anyone got any idea as to what's wrong with my workstation?

Linux teh 2.6.8-gentoo-r10 #3 Thu Oct 21 22:20:08 EDT 2004 i686 AMD
Athlon(tm) XP 1800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Shouldn't it be resolv.conf rather than resolve.conf ???

Well, the normal troubleshooting technique would be to bring up an xterm
and then test your DNS resolving. You may like to try emerging
"bind-tools" and use the "host" and "dig" tools to test your DNS setup.

software laser n.

An optical laser works by bouncing
photons back and forth between two mirrors, one totally reflective
and one partially reflective. If the lasing material (usually a
crystal) has the right properties, photons scattering off the atoms
in the crystal will excite cascades of more photons, all in
lockstep. Eventually the beam will escape through the
partially-reflective mirror. One kind of sorcerer's apprentice mode inv
results, with a cascade of messages escaping to flood nearby
systems. By mid-1993 there had been at least two publicized
incidents of this kind.

it should be and it is.
i've since compiled gentoo dev sources 2.6.9 and rebooted
same problem. although i've added a few dns serers to my /etc/resolv.conf
and i can resolve the address using my brother's win2k box on the LAN, my
browser still doesnt' load the page!
i'm totally confused here.

Looks like your machine tried to query your gateway/router for the DNS
lookup but the connection was refused. Looking at the dig below, Im
guessing that your initial UDP query is replaced by a TCP query because
the reply packet is too big (as evidenced by lots of answers below). Make
sure you dont have a firewall active or something on your router/gateway
that is refusing TCP connections on port 53.

my gateway/router acts as a DNS server for a winxp box just fine.
conx refused from gentoo for this host.
only using NAT on my router, which is a linksys BEFSR81 version 1.
