Need xfree, but it's masked
Any attempt to emerge is now blocked on my system, because of a
conflict of several incompatible things.
1) tk requires virtual/x11
2) I have x11-base/xfree in world, and xfree-4.3.0-r6 installed
3) Portage has only an ebuild for xfree-4.3.0-r7, but says it's masked

Now, I cannot even find where it's masked. There's no mention of it
in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask, for instance.

I sure would like to go back to emerging stuff. Any clues out there?
Is this just a rude way of forcing me over to xorg? I'm still hearing
horror stories about that, and I'm reluctant. I run only stable stuff,
not inclined to experiment.

I would prefer to get portage to accept the xfree I have, or to find
out why the one available version is blocked.

The available version is masked due to licensing issues that have come up
recently with XFree86. Switch to X.org, it's completely compatible with
XFree86.

I have both tk and X.org installed w/o any problem.

It is *not* completely compatible, as users of ATI cards have learned.
Xorg 6.8 changed the way GLX works, and the ATI binary drivers no
longer work correctly.

Re: Need xfree, but it's masked [ In reply to ]
Color me red in the face. Again. I had masked xfree's latest revision
a while ago in order to do a quick emerge (most of) world. I neglected
to unmask it, and the failure of this later emerge was not enough to
jog my memory. I only found it by methodically tracking down the mask.

So the mask was my fault, and all my grumbling about gentoo policies
is shown to be unjustified. Apologies to all.
