One reason not to go with Xorg-x11
Having a spare day to fool around with my linux game machine.... I decided to
try moving from xfree-4.3.0-r7 to xorg-6.8.0-r1 and see what new features
were awaiting me....

After backing up my highly tuned XF86Config file, I went about the process...
unmerge xfree, emerge xorg-x11...

Right off the get go, I ahd problems with my all favorite "legacy" game, Quake
III Arena. I'm only able to play a few seconds of the fight and the video
locks up solid. I can telnet/putty into the desktop and try to kill off X,
but it just refuses to die. So, I'm left with a live desktop, just no gui or
local xterm logins... That sucks. After a ton of googling, all kinds of quake
hacking... I gave up.

The ultimate fix was re-install xfree. I'm back to battling my neighbors and
his kids like "normal"...

So, anyone hear of a similar situation? That is, xorg and quake3 not mixing it
up well?

Thanks, Jerry.

What kind of video chip are you using? If it's ATI then you can forget
about 6.8 and go with 6.7. Even if not try using xorg-6.7 since 6.8 is
marked as ~.

well, nope. I can just play doom3 and all kinds of unreal tournament, too.
So, why shouldn't quake? however, you really didn't mention your video card,
that may cause this problem ;)
I'm running NVIDIA GeForceFX.

I can back that up 100% ... ATI drivers and xorg are REALLY quite a pain
in the ass ... although I got it finally running.

Instead of doing all that hacking, googling, and tweaking, had you
checked Bugzilla (which would be the first place to go before installing
a major application that is going to impact your "highly tuned
configuration"), you would have found:

Bug # 61574: opengl apps crash xorg-x11-6.8.0 with ati-drivers
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61574

Bug # 63924: xorg-x11-6.8.0 together with ati-drivers-3.11.1 freezes system
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63924

Even though you haven't said, I'm 99% positive you are using ATI
drivers, because this problem does not exist for any video drivers *but*
the ATI proprietary binaries.

And no, it doesn't matter which version; if you look at the ChangeLog
for the newest 3.14 drivers, it specifically says that the problem with
X.org 6.8 is *not* fixed.

I have an ATI card, though, and the ATI drivers (=>3.11) work fine with
X.org 6.7 (or as fine as the ATI drivers are considered to work, anyway,
but I haven't had any problems).

so far my moving from xfree 4.3 to xorg 6.8 seems to be smooth. I am
using a nvidia gf mx 440
what i have done is very simple:

emerge unmerge xfree
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge xorg
emerge nvidia-kernel
emerge nvidia-glx
opengl-update nvidia

everything works fine including 3d games such as quake III, america army
and my epsxe ps emulator.

The only problem I have so far is mplayer and realone player.
when i choose to use xvideo as the video output in mplayer or set using
xvideo in realplayer, all i've got is a black or blue window/screen with
only audio of any kind of media files. when choose to use x11 as vo or
disable xvideo in real, they worked. However, I cannot get a full screen
playingback in mplayer. I mean when i pressed "f", it dose change to the
full screen mode, but the video in the center of the screen is the same
size as in the 1x window mode.

Strange!! any suggestions?

Thanks
