Painful Portage problem
When i try to emerge Perl (in order to update portage) it freezes, my
machine keeps running, everything seems ok, but the emerge stops right
there without throwing any error messages. Besides this, suddenly, a lot
packages i thought i had are gone, or at leasts the portage does not see
them. I am frankly dazzled and confused, dont know what to do, any help
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How long did you wait for it? If it's trying to get your hostname and
it can't resolve it will take a while. However, it should timeout
after a while (this may happen sometimes when you try to start X; the
first thing it does is look up your hostname). Try doing it again and
let it sit for a bit when it gets to the hostname part.

When creating a new topic, please create a new message instead of
replying to an already existing conversation. Lots of people (me
included) use threading mail clients, and we sort things by the
conversation (thread).

Add your hostname and appropriate ip address to your /etc/hosts file,
and it shouldn't stop there anymore.

If you don't have a static address, you can add it to the end of the
"127.0.0.1" line.
