/var/tmp/portage
Is it safe to delete the contents of /var/tmp/portage? Cuz uhhh... I
just did. I know I should have asked first but I'm too impulsive.

I'm a newbie in gentoo arena, but yeah. I believe so. Since
portage/emerge just uses that directory as a scratch pad

As long as you're not emerging at the same time, yep :)
It's where things are compiled, and installed to, before merging to the live
filesystem.
Sometimes stuff gets left behind, usually as a result of failed compiles, or
merges.

2.0.51? Yes.

2.0.50? No. You've lost your world file and portage's record of installed
virtuals. Execute /usr/lib/portage/bin/regenworld
and /usr/lib/portage/bin/fixvirtuals to get them back.

I hate to correct a Gentoo dev, but 2.0.50 holds virtual and world info
in /var/cache/edb, not /var/tmp/portage :)

So is it completely ok to rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/* even in 2.0.50?

Yep. I need more sleep. ;)

Yes, it is. You shouldn't do so while a emerge is running, though.

And how about /usr/portage/packages and /usr/portage/distfiles? If
i'm right, 'distfiles' contains downloaded sources and 'packages'
contains compiled ebuilds, is it safe to completely rm all contents to
gain disk space? I dont need either if i have a good internet
connection, do i?

Thanks for clarification.

/usr/portage/packages shouldn't have anything in it, you have to turn on the
feature for building binary packages, but you can indeed delete it's content.
/usr/portage/distfiles can also be deleted whenever you want, but it's
*possible* you'll waste bandwidth later on.

Yes, it's even safe to rm -rf /var/tmp/portage - I do it in
/etc/conf.d/local.stop to keep things clean.
