installing gentoo from universal live cd, 2004.1
Greetings,
Firstly I am new to gentoo, Hello to all .
I have hit a wall in the installation,
The problem is this, I am learning gentoo first and have a spare PC 2.4Ghz ,
80gig, 512MB at home with no intenet access.
When I try with a stage 1 install I get upto the bootstrap, the system
attempts to connect to the net even though I have not used the "-f" option.
And it is persistent it will not continue with out a connection. The manual
states it is possible to install without a connection.
How do I work around this?
Thanks

You can't do a stage 1 with a Universal Live Cd.

-----
Gentoo's Universal LiveCD

Gentoo's Universal LiveCD is a bootable CD suitable to install Gentoo
without networking. It contains a stage1 and several stage3 tarballs
(optimized for the individual subarchitectures). For example the x86
variant of this CD is called install-x86-universal-2004.2.iso and can
be found in the universal subdirectory.
-----

If you want to do a Stage 1, you have to boot from the Gentoo's
Minimal LiveCD, then get from the Internet all the packages. There's a
workaround for getting the files without internet connection:

The -f flag tells portage to _only_ fetch the source files rather than
fetch _and_ build (check "man emerge").

Copy the distfiles from the CD into /usr/portage/distfiles and make sure
that you're using the portage snapshot from the CD.

Hang on there the Gentoo handbook that is on the cds says you can and gives
clear instructions on how to step by step, are saying that the handbook is
wrong?
It clearly states that you need the universal cds to do a stage one install.
I have the universal live cds 2004.1
and I quote from the book on page 14:
"Gentoo's Universal LiveCD is a bootable CD suitable t install Gentoo without
networking. It contains a stage1 and several stage3 tarballs (optimised for
the individual subarchitectures). For example...."
and that tells me I can do a stage 1 and three but not stage2.

And then on page 20:
"Generally you will need to setup networking (and internet). However, Gentoo
also provides the possibility to install without a network connection. This
exeption is only possible with the Gentoo Universal liveCDs."

No mentioning you can't do a stage one. Are you sure you can't?
I am not fighting you I just really want to do it from the ground up. and get
a better understanding of the whole system.

Hi,
Without network connection you could do only (check again) stage3
install, not sure about stage2.
For stage1 install you need access to the Net to download the needed
sources. Somewhere in the handbook there is (were) a table which shows
what kind of install you can do w or w/o Net.

Not without the necessary source files you can't.

Follow the link that Andre Moore posted earlier or connect your box to
the net.

No, Im not saying that...

> It clearly states that you need the universal cds to do a stage one install.

No, wrong. You only need the Gentoo's Minimal LiveCD for doing the net
install, with no packages pre-compiled.

Handbook says:
Minimal LiveCD You can do a stage1, stage2 or stage3 by getting the
stage tarball off the
net.

In the actual documentation says:

The stage1 tarball is used when you want to bootstrap and build the
entire system from scratch.

With all of live cds (minimal of universal) you can build a stage1
gentoo...but the original purpouse of the Universal Cds its for making
a system with precompiled binaries and install without a Internet
connection. If you want to set up from 0, please, make a favor to the
mirrors of Gentoo and get the Minimal cd.

And I dont to fight with you... :) Its just a different approach of
what you want with the right cd. With the Universal Cd you cant do a
stage 1 without internet connection......if you have the universal cd
and plus the package cd, you re done, with or without inet connection.
