Synaptics Touch Pad --slight problem
Seemingly, the only problem I am having w/my Synaptics touchpad is the
inability to substitute a tap on the pad for the left mouse button. I would
like to know if anyone has been successful getting this feature to work --and
if so, the resource they tapped.

Thanks!

I really wish it *was* that easy! Here's the output I get:
bash-2.05b# emerge -pv synaptics

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies
!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy "synaptics" have been masked.
!!! possible candidates are:
- x11-misc/synaptics-0.12.4 (masked by: ~keyword)
- x11-misc/synaptics-0.13.2 (masked by: ~keyword)
- x11-misc/synaptics-0.12.5 (masked by: ~keyword)
- x11-misc/synaptics-0.13.3 (masked by: ~keyword)

!!! Error calculating dependencies. Please correct.
...I'm just n00b enough to Gentoo that I do not understand how to deal with
this situation. Any guidance deeply appreciated!

I have an HP ze5570us Pavilion so am wondering if perhaps we both have the
same touchpad At any rate, I suspect you already have emerged the synaptics
ebuild. No? (BTW: I don't use a USB mouse. ...Ane *please* bottom-post...)

Another weird thing is that on the SuSE distro the mouse is specified as
ExplorerPS/2 and the tapping works. Don't know how they did it but I'm
hoping to emulate the behaviour. I can always turn the thing off when I
type.

Supposedly the HID is enabled in my kernel but the module won't load. Comes

This is certainly doable; I have fully configured the touchpad on my HP
Pavillion ze5730us. See:

http://tuxmobil.org/touchpad_driver.html

Also I can send you the applicable portion of my XFree86.conf file if
you can't get it working with the documents at that link...

The major difference is that I used 'genkernel --makeconfig all' to build
mine, and I checked to make certain HID was enabled before I said 'let 'er
rip'. Puzzling.

I did this but still had to make some changes to my
/etc/X11/XFree86.conf file. This was several months ago; the newer
ebuilds might take care of updating this?

One item of note; if you have a USB mouse (I use a Targus USB wireless
mouse when I'm not playing sardine on an Airbus 319) then there is a
way to get it to play nice with your synaptics touchpad; i.e. use
multiple pointing devices under X.

Again, just let me know if you want me to send my conf file directly to
you.

You might e-mail it to the list for folks who might like to peruse it.

I currently have a Logitech USB mouse on my laptop that I can't get Gentoo
to see for the life of me. None of the kernel mods seem to pick that mouse
up. The touchpad is seen as a PS/2 mouse, though. Works reasonably well
but I hate the touchpad. :-)

Re: Synaptics Touch Pad --slight problem [ In reply to ]
to install a masked package you need to do this:

ACCEPT_KEYWORD="~x86" emerge synaptics

but maybe you should do an emerge sync first to see if the package was
actualiced and it is not masked right now... if I remember well... the
synaptics driver that I'm using right now it is masked too... btw:
your machine is a x86 machine no? because if it is an ppc or amd64 you
should change the ~x86 for the one from your platform.

The reason i said it's as simple as it gets is that i did an emerge
search synaptics on m ymachine to verify that there was an ebuild for
it and i'm almost certain it didn't show up as masked...maybe i was
wrong....

have you done a gentoo forum search for anyone with the same issues?

Well... here you have the sections of my xorg.conf that affects to the
mouse configuration... usb and touchpad... maybe that helps you:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "TouchPad Mouse" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
InputDevice "usb-mouse" "AlwaysCore"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"

Driver "synaptics"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "LeftEdge" "1900"
Option "RightEdge" "5400"
Option "TopEdge" "1900"
Option "BottomEdge" "4000"
Option "FingerLow" "25"
Option "FingerHigh" "30"
Option "MaxTapTime" "180"
Option "MaxTapMove" "220"

I hope that helps you both to configure your touchpad and usb-mouse...
btw my usb mouse is a logitech mouse too...

the options of he synaptics probably you need to change... my laptop
is an hp zd7050ea that has a huge touchpad... so that settings won't
fit your own touchpad... try this: http://www.linux-laptop.net/ to see
if you can find an synaptics configuration for your laptop or a
similar one...

Think this pretty much covers anything you'd get out of my conf file...
The "MaxTapTime" parameter is the one, I believe, that will take care
of your left-click issue.

All of my directives were in the file that was already posted before I
got to posting mine... Nothing unique here!

Have you tried the "hid" kernel module?

Yes, HID is turned on in my kernel. Still nothing shows up in dmesg about
finding a USB mouse.

I'd bet that's your problem... Try `locate hid.o` to see where it's
hiding. Almost any time I have a problem with a missing module, it's
because I've done something wrong during my `make dep & make modules
modules_install`

It dawned on me just now that I misstated the problem! I can use the mouse
button (and it works) but cannot make the tap on the pad work in its place.
I am using a fresh install of 2004.2 and have not synched the system, yet.

The common problem, here, is I am getting instructions which utilize the
synaptics driver. I can't seem to emerge the driver by even changing the
'keyword' argument.

Worked out-of-the-box here...

What GUI are you running and version of X?

umm... I never used that ExplorerPS/2 driver...and I'm not sure if we
both have the same laptop... mine is a 17" ws laptop... with a
touchpad very big... and yeah... turn it off and on works with any
driver... it is nice feature because I always touch by error the
touchpad...

BTW: these are the modules that I autoload when I turn on my computer (
/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6):

8139too
uhci_hcd
usbhid
nvidia
evdev

8139too it is my ethernet card, nvidia... well, driver card ;),
uhci_hcd and usbhid are for hid usb devices... like my wireless
usb-mouse and evdev was requeired by the synaptics driver...

I'm in the middle of compiling my kernel right now ...since on boot it kept
stating that the hid modules weren't found. I didn't think it'd even look
for htem if they weren't compiled into the kernel. At any rate, someone else
mentioned the hid.o module so have gone into the USB section & turned stuff
on indiscrimately to make sure I have it ....well, not quite. ;-) THanks for
the list!
