Firefox 1.0 Preview Release - Crashes
I just upgraded to the Firefox 1.0 and when I open second profile it
won't read the setting, bookmarks etc. When I open profile it freezes.

It works fine with one profile, it only effects second profile.
Anybody has any suggestions?

My install works as well, but there's a few issues.
1. The help -> about window brings up debug info (very minor)
2. The icons in my bookmarks are gone (very minor)
3. remembered passwords are gone (minor)

Re: Firefox 1.0 Preview Release - Crashes [ In reply to ]
For what it's worth, whenever there's a major update to mozilla based
software (a major point release), I move my profile
(.mozilla,.thunderbird, etc) to foo.old and then fire up the software,
letting it create a new profile, etc.

I then copy over my bookmarks file, in the case of the browser, and
run through the configuration, setting things back to the way I like
them.

This may seem like a horribly tedious thing to do, but major point
releases don't happen very often, and there aren't _that_ many
settings that I have to modify. And following this procedure has quite
possibly saved me a significant amount of "why doesn't this work right
anymore" chagrin.

Just a thought ...

Cheers,

Sean

bg & Joseph,

Try removing ~/.mozilla/firefox/default.xxx/compreg.dat and restarting
firefox. You may find that it will solve a number of unusual problems
with this upgrade. It's worked for me and for several others here.

Please do me/us a favor and let me/us know if the saved passwords *still* are
gone. If they are, I'll stay w/0.8.

Thanks! ;o)

Actually it is not necessary do redo all settings.
In the Profile folder of Mozilla|Firefox|Thunderbird there are two
files containing all user settings.

user.js and prefs.js

The Difference is:
user.js:
You can use this file to set your own settings permantly.
Moz|Ff|Tb will read this file during every startup.

prefs.js:
This file is more systemside. Moz|Ff|Tb using this file to save
the settings you did in the Menus during the session for next startup.
Therefore this file gets overridden after every session.

You can also just copy things from pref.js to user.js over.

Anyway if you also save this two files make a new preofile and then copy
them back, you do not have to redo any settings!

For my Ff and Tb I did this files once and now every now and then I can
use them and Ff and Tb always have the same settings.

The saved passwords (from your previous profile) should still be in the
old profile folder. I usually make a new profile and copy them over
(signons.txt and cookies.txt), along with bookmarks.html.

It's worked fine for me through several upgrades.

Thanks. Deleting compreg.dat fixed the password problem, but didn't help
the debug message (item 1), or the bookmark icons.

Does anyone know what's up with that green image with an arrow pointing
upwards (*not* the GO button) it's been bugging me ever since I upgraded
cause I wasn't able to make it do anything.

According to its caption, it's the "Upgrade" button. Presumably it
checks for upgraded versions of the browser and your extensions. If
there are none, it's not going to do anything.

Now I'm curious. I don't have such a button.

it's not a button but a image ... right next to the circles in a circle
on the right.

I also like the new way find appears ... as a bar.

If you disabled the automatic update checking in
Edit=>Preferences=>Advanced=>Software Update=>Periodically check for
updates to=>uncheck 'Firefox', it seems that you wouldn't have such a
button.

At least I don't, neither on the bar by default, nor in the unused
Customize buttons, and I would imagine that's why. Just guessing, though.

Since upgrading, Find doesn't work for me. Highlight works, but Find
Next and Find Previous do not. Also, the "X" to close the Find bar
has to be clicked twice on my system. No one else has these problems?

The main ways I'd imagine my system differs from the norm would be
xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 and a hardened toolchain and kernel. I had no
choice with xorg 6.8 since my laptop's video card does not work under
6.7.

However you describe it, it's still not there with my firefox. There's
absolutely nothing next to the circles in a circle.

I have the same bug, when I use the mozilla-firefox ebuild. The
precompiled binary from mozilla-firefox-bin works fine (but I want to
compile it myself, dammit!). FWIW, I'm using xorg 6.7.0-r1 -- not 6.8.0
-- and my toolchain and kernel are not hardened.

I could find anything about the problem from googling or searching
forums.gentoo.org, so I'm glad to see here that it's not just me. Maybe
I need to search bugs.gentoo.org more often. :)

I would suggest looking it mozillazine for an answer.

FWIW, find works (or doesn't work) for me exactly as you described the
problem. I almost never use find, so I wouldn't have thought of
testing this.
