Firstly, it's not masked, but rather just in testing (~arch). If you
need an ~arch package, you might as well get the latest one since it
will also include the latest bug fixes, IMO.
To install an ~arch version of a package, add it to
/etc/portage/package.keywords. Assuming /etc/portage exists, you can
just do:
echo "app-misc/foo ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge foo -pv
Read 'man portage' for all the lovely details.
