xorg-x11-6.8.99* CVS snapshots leading up to xorg-x11-6.9
You might have noticed that xorg-x11 has entered its next release cycle,
leading up to -6.9. Currently, it is package-masked and has no sparc
keyword. In the next day or so --- certainly by the end of this week
--- I am going to build it and start testing. If it works, I'll give it
a ~sparc keyword. If you want to play with it, you'll have to unmask it
yourself in /etc/portage.

Documentation at freedesktop
http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/#head-7f9963a87b2eb461fc821f70af0cecbb33788ba8 indicates that the sunffb -xaa- patch is now included with the standard distribution, and comments at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1259
suggest that the sunleo fix is included, too (although summary comments
do not so indicate). If these are the case, I'll start cleaning up
various associated Gentoo bugs.

NOTE: For those of you who have been living under rocks, the xaa/render
improvements for sunffb are incompatible with DRI, and Creator/DRI is
therefore disabled in the xorg-x11 sunffb driver. With this, all
pretense of Creator+DRI+xorg-x11 is gone. (The Mesa/openGL libraries
are still present and usable, of course.)

Oh, yes. How do you recognize the ebuilds for pre-6.9? Look for
xorg-x11-6.8.99.xx. (Hm, that's the subject line of this note, isn't
it :-) )

Comments, test results, feedback welcome.
Regards,
Ferris

This has happened. On my two test cases, (U2-SMP + ffb2+, U60-SMP +
afb, both kernel 2.4.xx systems) it built, installed, and is running
with no local modifications. If you want to play with it, note:
1. You'll need to add x11-base/xorg-x11 to
your /etc/portage/package.unmask file (or however you unmask packages);
2. xaa acceleration + font rendering improvements are now standard in
the Creator (sunffb) driver. With this, the ffb DRI facility is
hard-disabled and so no longer an option.
3. sunleo fixes seem to be incorporated, but I cannot verify directly.
4. On my systems, some openGL (Mesa) programs exhibit unusual behavior.
E.g.,glxgears reports reasonable performance, but there is a lot of
slippage. (On the screen, gears are very slow.) This might or might
not be attributable to an update to Mesa (to 6.2.1)

If you choose to try this out on sparc, please record your experiences
here:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89801

Email back to me directly might work, too, but I get a lot of it and
sometimes discard it before reading. I always read changes to bugs I am
tracking, however. (Just a little advice to those who want their
experiences taken into account.)

Please review that site, and note the "Changes since..." link.

Sunleo changes seem to be included. Feedback to bug 89801, please. I
have closed the ffb_dri bug as "Can't fix" because it can't be fixed; I
am keeping the 6.8.2-r1 tracker at Bug 79467 open for now, but I would
request that anyone experiencing difficulties with 6.8.2, or anyone
installing X for the first time please give 6.8.99 a try. (I'm echoing
Donnie's request here. If it looks like plagiarism, that's because it
is.)

Next time I get some spare CPU cycles on the ss20, I'll give it a go and
let you know how it goes.
