Gentoo rsync mirror spring cleaning
-----------------------------------

A legacy module that is still being supported for backward compatibility
for the settings in a few people's /etc/make.conf is a strong candidate
for removal. A few of those users who have been synchronizing their
Portage tree since 2001 or so may still have a line in their config file
that points to the old gentoo-x86-portage module. As removing this option
would make mirror configuration much easier, a simple replacement of
gentoo-x86-portage with gentoo-portage is all that's needed:

+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| Code Listing 1.1: |
| /etc/make.conf |
+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| |
|SYNC="rsync://192.168.0.75/gentoo-x86-portage" | Change this line |
|SYNC="rsync://192.168.0.75/gentoo-portage" | to this |

GWN translation forces need support
-----------------------------------

Park Jin Kyu, the lead translator for the GWN's excellent Korean version,
has been chipping away at the newsletter translations mostly by himself
for the last few issues. To help him assure a steady service for our
readers in Korea, please contact him directly[1] or send an e-mail to our
own feedback address[2].

1. jinkyupark@gmail.com
2. gwn-feedback@gentoo.org

Meanwhile, a new simplified Chinese version of the GWN is just about ready
for official publication. Robert Zhang Le already has a few collaborators
but could equally use additional help. The first issue of the simplified
Chinese GWN will be posted shortly, please contact Robert[3] or, again,
gwn-feedback@gentoo.org.

Austria: Gentoo at the Grazer Linuxtage
---------------------------------------

On 20 May, the community part of the annual Grazer Linuxtage[4] will be
held in the FH Joanneum, Graz. As in 2005, a number of Gentoo developers
as well as friends and contributors will represent Gentoo at a booth set
up in the exhibition hall. They'll be giving away free stickers, selling
case badges[5], burning live-cds and be available for a chat about Gentoo,
the universe and everything else. A lot of interesting lectures[6] will be
held throughout the day. As last year, the Gentoo booth will be adjacent
to those of the grml[7] and Debian projects, and rumors indicate that
there will be an unusually strong connecting band between those three. If
you want to know what that's all about, visit the Grazer Linuxtag to find
out!

Italy: Gentoo at the Linux World Summit in Milano
-------------------------------------------------

What used to be the "Linux World Expo" in Italy changed both organization
and name this year, to become the Linux World Summit[8]. This
predominantly business-oriented Linux event is opening its doors 15 and 16
May in Milano. The Gechi (Gentoo Channel Italia)[9] activists will be
there with a stand on both days. You'll find the latest Gentoo
installation and package CD for many of the supported architectures, and
the lxnay RR4/RR64 LiveDVD[10]. Their creator will be there on Monday
afternoon presenting a new product of the RR family. Gechi T-shirts will
also be on sale. On display at the booth: a cluster of four Via Epia and a
Sun Fire V120. Check the Gechi forum[11] for additional details (in
Italian). See you there!

Norway: PHP developer conference with Gentoo developer participation
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Sebastian Bergmann[12] and Stuart Herbert[13] are both invited to attend
the PHP Vikinger[14] conference -- or rather "unconference", as organizer
Zak Greant likes to call it -- in Skien next month, 24 and 25 June 2006.
The birthtown of Henrik Ibsen in Norway's Telemark province is unlikely to
offer many distractions for participants, so they can fully concentrate on
what is announced as "an incredibly awesome event" centering on PHP
development, with both invited guests and individually registering
attendees from all over the planet.

Linuxdevices (9 May 2006)
-------------------------

The magazine specializing in news from the embedded Linux market,
Linuxdevices, reports about a new embedded processor module that ships
with Gentoo Linux pre-installed. The article[15] reviews the Israeli
company CompuLab's latest product, a single board computer targeting
real-time and telecommunication applications, the CM-F82[16] and its 70MB
image of Gentoo Linux inside.
