Important : 2006.0 Handbooks
Hi devs,

Most of you would have noticed the 2006.0 stuff (copied over 2005.0 + a
few minor changes) sitting under /doc/en/handbook/draft/2006.0.

Starting in a while and over most of the weekend, I'll be making quite a
few major changes to the x86 handbook (mainly) as well as a few changes
to the other handbooks to get them ready for 2006.0.

The main reason for this email is to let our translation teams know that
stuff will change quite fast over the weekend and I'd like to request
you all to wait a while before you start syncing with en.

I'll drop in a note as soon as most of the stuff is done, so that you
guys can start on what you do best :)

Thanks & Regards,

Just to clarify, the *major* changes will be on the x86 handbook only.
The others are expected to be minor and hence not much of an issue. If
any of you other chaps would like to lend a hand (like JoseJX who's
taking care of PPC) would be fine, please make your changes to
doc/en/handbook/draft/2006.0 though.

Also, due to the large number of changes on x86, I'm thinking of two
things :

a) A tracker bug where I'll just list out the changes, adding
stuff/clear your doubts if any.[1]

b) A short IRC meeting sometime over the weekend to discuss how best to
incorporate the new things into the handbook.

Not too sure how b will work out though.

TIA folks!

Okay folks, just a heads up...

Majority of the 2006.0 handbook stuff across all archs is now done. You
are requested to stop by
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/draft/2006.0 and check out stuff
to see if you can spot any errors/obvious mistakes we need to fix before
this goes final.

The x86 networkless install cannot proceed without the shiny new Gentoo
Linux Installer and hence large portions of the x86 handbook have
disappeared with a formal funeral ceremony (as requested by rane :p).

That's it for now. I'll be happy to answer any questions about the x86
CDs/Instructions for the 2006.0 release in case you have any.

Probably a stupid question but: What is the url for the CD so we can
test it against the Handbook?

I know I know, I should search and find it on my own but me and the kids
are sick and I don't feel like it. Please have pity on me and give me
the link?

There is none. Releng is keeping it tightly under wraps and only giving it out
to their team, afaik. They're still pushing out new releases/subreleases, or at
least did a day or so ago iirc. The only GLI releases available are those from
back in November.

You'd have to ask agaffney about procuring a copy. Right now, I've been doing
most of the handbook against the current screenshots available on
www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/installer/screenshots/ .

Ahhh OK. I should have known that. Sorry for the stupid question.

You can actually use the 2005.1-r1 CD from /experimental. There is a
link to the Installer FAQ on the Gnome desktop. In the FAQ, it tells
you how to update the Installer to the latest snapshot. Doing that will
be the same as getting a new CD, except the kernel and the packages will
be older.

Just a note to say everything is done, 2006.0 has just been released and
translators can go forth with their work :)

Heh, slightly unfriendly schedule for translators, "release has
already been done, please go and translate" ;-)

But thanks for doing the migration nicely, proper cvs diffs from 2005.1
and stuff make update not too painful for those who have bothered with
draft changes. Nice work.

True and please do accept my apologies for the same :) Next time I'll
let you folks know in advance, promise!

I kind of forgot that we had the "main" handbooks and well, as you can
see, quite a few changes were needed in there (which were made at a
stretch over 5 hours yesterday).

Thanks! and yes, Sven mentioned the right way to go about it, which I
did. If you see the diffs, the *main* differences would be x86, the rest
are cosmetic and I had faith that our translators will finish them in no
time and hence the short notice ;)

If anybody else thought "let's burn the !@$!@#%", I'm in as well!

On a more serious note though, hat's off to Shyam and all the other
people who contributed to this doc -- I know it's been a lot of hard
work over a very limited period of time.As always this is one of the
central pillars on which Gentoo's soon-to-be world dominance will be
built. :-)
