That seems to have done the trick, thank you.

I have built an Exim 4.97.1 rpm which includes both this fix and the fix from
https://bugs.exim.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3046 ("ced0bbf43860"), and will try
deploying this on our live servers tomorrow morning.
