4.96.1 is a target security release, so nothing was lost, this is by design.

I'll just generate a patch for 4.96.1, having stayed on 4.95 awaiting the fix
to appear in the next release, but this no longer being an option.

I cherry-picked the commit mentioned in the comments already. There was a
conflict in one of the test cases that needs to be resolved. Should be doable
by today. (But these days are quite busy, as you've noticed probably.)

I would very much welcome that. The same goes for commit
1ed24e36e279c922d3366f6c3144570cc5f54d7a (without this I see a lot of exim
4.96.1+fixes crashes on large mailing lists that didn't exist in 4.95).

In my opinion, the +fixes branch should fix all serious bugs and crashes.

1ed24e36e279c922d3366f6c3144570cc5f54d7a is cherry-picked now. And updated the
buildfarm to pick exim-4.96.1+fixes instead of exim-4.96+fixes.
