Bricolage should be able to diff last checked-in version vs currently checked out version (working copy) without the need to check-in the asset first. Determining what changes have occurred since checkout would improve the quality of the asset by removing unnecessary versions that may contain errors, omissions, or bonus content simply because an easy diff was unavailable.

This has never worked for us, are you sure this is the default behavior. Diff as only ever worked with versions that are checked-in.

It should be, but it doesn't mean it is. Based on #197, I'd say it was a bug.
