Perhaps the "Related Story:" and "Related Media:" checkboxes on the element type profile screen could be converted to drop-down menus with the options none/optional/required, a flag added to the db, and a check performed when elements are saved (via the UI or otherwise).

__Note:__ good template code should still check for the presence of required objects, obviously.
