In case this hasn't been answered:

I think it completely depends on the setup of your cluster. It can
obviously handle as many connections as can Apache. If you have a flat,
single tier cluster, then you will need to do some tweaking to increase
the cost of proxying if you typically have a high connection count. If
you are using a two tier set up, then it should be only limited by your
Apache configuration. You may need to recompile Apache with a high
HARD_SERVER_LIMIT -- after which you will need to recompile mod_backhand
so that is "picks up" these changes.
