Perhaps it would be beneficial to put the Apache license
verbage (that stuff that appears in the code) out on the
Web Site along with a more detailed "statement of purpose"
in which to frame this verbage.

As I am a newbie, here's a question: Why did this group
not simply adopt the Free Software Foundation's "copyleft"
verbage, as opposed to the current? My understanding of
that "license" is that it would have the effect you
intend (I THINK you intend): that "this product is built
with Apache. You can use it, modify it, and even sell
support and service for it, but you have to give away the
source."

(I am interested in the group's response as my company is
interested in moving our work from a "formerly public domain
server" to Apache. We want there to continue to be a
well-supported "free server" that supports our mods.)

Well, as long as it's just for $$$, and not $$$$ or $$$$$, then I suppose
it's alright. +1!

Seriously, someone give 'em the scoop. I think when they see the API
they should go *ooooh, we don't need to do this in CGI anymore*.

+1.

It looks like a NeXT only product... which would mean $$$$$$$$. I don't
see why not, as long the product, name, documents, and source code
are included.

BTW, their site is very very very boring.... looks like they designed it around
a 20" monitor....

This seems like a good idea. I'm chatting to some commercial people about
connecting one of their products to the Apache API, and I'm sure I'm not the
only person here doing that. Whilst it's vital to not deflect the present
aim to produce a good webserver, free of unnecessary constraints and kludges,
it'd also be wise to have documentation to hand which can assist commercial
operations in adapting the software to their needs.

Thoughts?
Ay.
Re: Apache HTTP Server Project (fwd) [ In reply to ]
Oooo, interest from a big company...

If anyone else wants to handle this, be my guest. If not what shall
I tell him ? - i guess the answer is "Please feel free to redistribute
Apache for free (you may charge for support), but please do not
redistribute it under any other name. There will be a new license text
attached to Apache in a week or two, it basically says the above, but
you should probably wait to read it."

anything else ?

Sounds like you've covered it. If this is something you don't
want to do, let me know and I will contact him.

I'm offering the honour to whoever wants it. I thought it'd be good
experience for someone (anyone who wants) to talk on behalf of the
Apache project.

I'd like to see more of the people on the list participate in all aspects
of the project (this will guarantee continued success) as well as
make more people aware of the people involved.

Now, if nobody wants to talk to the NeXT guy, I'll be happy to.

I would be happy to talk to the NeXT guy, and the next and the next. ;)

the company sendmail so you may have already decided to do this yourself.

If I hear nothing to the contrary ("Wait, I already mailed him") by tomorrow
morning GMT then I'll send him some mail. It's likely that at least some
of the conversation will be such that I can CC the list, but this is
real life and the NeXTers might want to keep hush. Whatever, we'll cope.

My reply was just a greeting. I'll keep the group posted.

My plan is really just to reiterate what Robh said yesterday, and
make the point that the Apache Group's concern is to get credit for
the code/binary that is being distributed by keeping the "copylicense"
intact.

Plus a free NeXT for all members of the group.... :-)

Two fixes, either turn on Xbit, or use the x-parse from srm.conf. That
basicly says it.

Any chanse you can summarise your conversation to the list. We all need to
be saying the same things to people. To avoid confusion.
