New Apache Page

Re: New Apache Page [ In reply to ]
Sorry, Randy, but I still do find the link colors a bit too hard to
read, and I guess I have to echo Rob in not being thrilled with the black
background either. Some sort of makeover might be a good idea, but I'm
not sure that this is really the right thing.

(Hmmm... the yellow text might look OK against a dark brown background,
with maybe two muted shades of green for the link colors, but using
primary colors really isn't to my taste... at any rate, between the current
draft, and keeping the current version, I'd prefer to stick with what we've
got until we've had time to converge on something acceptable to everyone).

<HR> rules ok (sic).

There's no excuse to use gif bars, they annoy more people than they
impress. Netscape even lets you size them.

This worked wonders for the movie db.. it means you can read the text
while you wait for the decorations to be put up. Everyone should use
HEIGHT and WIDTH.

it's a nice relief from the server discussion though, you'd have to admit
that <BLINK>;-)</BLINK>

First off - I hope we don't have to have the same vote requirements on
Apache web site work as we do on code changes. My god, nothing will get
out! I am comfortable with leaving it up to Randy to listen to our
opinions and try to address large problems while knowing he is under no
pressure to please everyone.

I would have to say, yellow on black is not bad in my opinion. I like
the fact that he kept the blue=unvisited, red=visited link styles. An
informal poll of others here in the office agree, and we are
traditionally conservative when it comes to site design and page layout.

I have no formal opinion on the HR-as-a-gif issue, though yes, WIDTH and
HEIGHT should be used. They're small files, but they are separate
transactions (until HTTP/1.1) with TCP startup overhead (or can 180 bytes
usually fit within an entire packet, even for small-window connections?)

Mentioning the file sizes of the .Z and the .gz on that page might be
good, that way you don't have to link to the directories.

Rob Thau's distribution-level CHANGES file should be linked to as well
(I'll send comments on that separately).

Let's not let these issues drag us down....

I'm mostly religious at this point, but why not use something that's
cheaper and has nearly exactly the same effect ?

Also, I have a fast connection to the internet (at my university), but
still I'm in Europe, and another connection to the USA to open is still
some delay. You have to use transatlantic connections all the time to
really know what it is.

(Note: you can use WIDTH= and HEIGHT= as arguments to IMG, which helps
Netscape doing its display even when the image has not yet begun to
load. It's even in the HTML 3.0 draft, and it sure speeds things up
with Netscape. I would strongly suggest to put something like
<IMG SRC="images/apache_new.gif" ALT=" " WIDTH=400 HEIGHT=148> at the top
of the page.)

Anyway, this HTML design business could take us days, let's not forget
the release. And I should begin writing a new extended negotiation
module anytime now.
