Look in Start ... Settings ... Control Panel ... Administrative Tools.
Is Apache2 in the list?
If so, look in the Event viewer (also in Administrative Tools) under the
Applications list for the last few events, you may find an apache error
reported there (before the service could even open the log files.)
If not, I suspect that [although it started somehow] you either have some
automatic system configuration/restore tools running, or that you had another
web server running on port 80 when you attempted to install Apache. Stop other
web servers and reinstall Apache.
Either way, we aught to change the installer to output error results to the
installation log (that the awk script creates) by using the new -E errorlog
command line option when attempting to install Apache. This way, the user
will be told the results of attempting to install the service for future
troubleshooting of this sort.
