undefined symbol: X509_free when attempting to load mod_ssl

I built from sources using the following configure options:
--prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-mods-shared="rewrite info ssl dav"

When I start with SSL enabled using "apachectl startssl", I get the following
errors:

Cannot load /usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_ssl.so into server:
/usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_ssl.so: undefined symbol: X509_free
I am using version 0.9.6b of openssl
